Principles of Pathophysiology and Emergency Medical Care relates pathophysiological principles to emergency care of medical disorders. Material conforms to the 1999 EMT-Paramedic Curriculum objectives. Many illustrations and tables highlight important concepts that appeal to the visual learner. In-depth coverage of shock, acid-base, environmental and toxicological emergencies not found in other pathophysiology texts, but necessary for the EMS professional.

THE account of the use of mechanical ventilation in critically ill patients
A Doody's Core Title for 2011!
4 STAR DOODY'S REVIEW!
"This second edition continues the role established by its predecessor as the leading work in the field. Mechanical ventilation, as a defining event of critical care, has seen an explosion of physiologic and outcomes research in the past decade. Our thinking about management of ARDS, ventilator-induced lung injury, patient-ventilator interaction, and infectious complications has changed dramatically. All of this recent work is summarized here."--Doody's Review Service
Editor Martin J. Tobin--past editor-in-chief of the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine--has completely revised this text, acclaimed by The Lancet as "the bible of mechanical ventilation." The new edition is a cover-to-cover revision of the original content, filled with cutting-edge scientific insights from more than 200 contributors representing critical care, pulmonary medicine, anesthesiology, surgery, basic science, and radiology.
- Up-to-the minute, rigorous coverage that addresses every important scientific, clinical, and technical aspect of the field
- 70 well-organized chapters that encompass the full scope of mechanical ventilation, including the physical basis of mechanical ventilation; conventional, alternative, noninvasive, and unconventional methods of ventilator support; complications and airway management; and ethics and economics
- 24 new chapters on current issues in mechanical ventilation: Closed Loop Ventilation, Inhaled Antibiotic Therapy, Sleep and Speech in the Ventilated Patient, Mechanical Ventilation in ARDS, Ventilation Outside the ICU, and more
- Highly relevant new chapters on pharmacological and adjuvant therapy
- Greater use of tables and lists that conveniently summarize key information and solidify chapter concepts

Critical Care Nursing Handbook offers clinicians quick access to the latest treatment guidelines for the specific diseases and conditions most commonly found in the ER or ICU so they can treat the most vulnerable patients effectively and efficiently. This text includes such topics as pathophysiology, treatment guidelines, rationales to help clinicians quickly identify an illmess and treat a patient; IV infusion rates for the most common IV push medications; and a list of brand and generic names for over 1,600 prescription and over-the-counter medications. Diseases covered include: diabetic ketoacidosis Acute myocardial infarction Sepsis Stroke Meningitis
|Maxwell and Kleeman's Clinical Disorders of Fluid and Electrolyte Metabolism
Lowest new price: $199.86
Lowest used price: $39.58
List price: $185.00
This volume is an examination of the complex physiological and pathophysiological principles of fluid and electrolyte metabolism, translating them into clinically useful concepts. Once the pathophysiology is understood, the clinical presentations, diagnoses and therapies of these diseases become predictable and meaningful. This fifth edition is updated and expanded to include coverage of key issues related to medicine in intensive care units and the emergency room. It also features new material on renal transplantation and chronic renal failure.

Lowest used price: $143.49
List price: $24.99
This authoritative review clearly and concisely explains the need-to-know information about mechanical ventilation from the neonatal intensive care unit to the long-term care facility. The topics covered ranged from the basics of pulmonary physiology to novel modes of ventilatory support and gas exchange.
|Clinical Electrocardiography: PreTest? Self-Assessment and Review
Lowest new price: $322.00

List price: $49.95
Author: Franklin H. Zimmerman
Electrocardiograms are read by many health professionals, but it is critical that they be interpreted and understood by cardiologists. A four-hour session of the cardiology board exam is devoted to interpreting ECGs, and they are featured extensively in the anaesthesiology and critical care boards as well. In November 1993, the American College of Cardiology (ACC) begins recertification exams for its members. The ability to interpret ECGs is seen as being so crucial that the ACC has begun to offer review courses on the subject. This text consists of 200, high quality, three channel electrocardiograms, ranging from simple to complex, accompanied by a complete narrative history and usual interpretations. Readers can make their own diagnoses before turning the page to read the answer.

This book has been compiled with two goals in mind. First, it is directed to physicians in training. The hope is to expose young doctors to the interesting breadth and complexity of the patients who present to the pediatric intensive care unit. This is directed at any level of training. Starting pediatric interns can be exposed to a far greater number of cases than they would encounter just by sequentially admitting their portion of the patients. Likewise, senior fellows will benefit from the experiences of a great number of PICUs around the world
|Electrocardiography of Clinical Arrhythmias
Lowest new price: $78.42
Lowest used price: $7.97
List price: $96.95
Author: Charles Fisch
Because arrhythmias can present in so many different forms, the only way to be certain of an interpretation is to understand the underlying ECG mechanism of arrhythmia. This is especially important in choosing a management strategy, as similar arrhythmias of differing origin may have vastly different therapies/treatments. Unfortunately, standard teaching methods can seem to divorce the theoretical knowledge required for diagnosis from the hands-on reading of ECGs.
To achieve a balance of practicality and competency, the two parts of this book are equally divided between concrete example and didactic theory. Section I provides multiple ECG readings of the most commonly encountered simple and complex arrhythmias, and includes differential diagnosis where appropriate. These readings are presented with a minimum of theory, and are repetitively presented in multiple permutations, as they would be encountered in ECG reading room or on the wards. Section II provides a more in-depth discussion of ECG mechanisms and arrhythmogenesis. Attention is focused on the relevant underlying electrophysiology and the deductive processes used to reach the diagnoses of complex arrhythmias.
This book can serve as a quick and handy reference for systematic, rule-based arrhythmic diagnoses, as well as an authoritative teaching text for learning the underlying theory and mechanics. It will be of great interest to students and clinicians at all levels, including cardiologists, electrophysiologists, and others who care for patients with cardiovascular disease, ICU and ER staff, emergency physicians, anesthesiologists, and surgeons.
