Author: Dr. Laurie Mischley
Conventional management of Parkinson's disease (PD) is limited. The pharmaceutical and surgical options that are available have significant side effects and only correct symptoms for a limited period of time. Even with the best conventional treatment, the disease progresses and becomes severely disabling. No existing conventional therapies that the progress of the disease; available medicines only treat symptoms temporarily. Conventional medicine views the course of the disease as "progressive" and "irreversible." Many patients, who are only partially satisfied with conventional medicine, seek alternative and complementary options in an attempt to slow, stop, or reverse the disease process. This book has several functions: - It is a science-based reference manual. - It is inspiring and empowering to patients. - It is educational for both patients and neurologists. - It is entertaining. - It fosters an understanding between conventional and complementary providers. |What's Wrong With My Mouse: Behavioral Phenotyping of Transgenic and Knockout Mice
Lowest new price: $99.91
Lowest used price: $105.43
List price: $138.95
Author: Jacqueline N. Crawley
Dr. Jacqueline N. Crawley, author of the First and Second Editions of What’s Wrong with My Mouse? Behavioral Phenotyping of Transgenic and Knockout Mice,
continues to field calls and e-mails from molecular geneticists who ask: how do I run behavioral assays to find out what’s wrong with my mouse?
Turn to What’s Wrong with My Mouse? to discover the wealth of mouse behavioral tasks and to get the guidance you need to select the best methods and necessary controls. Chapters are organized by behavioral domain, including measurements of general health, motor functions, sensory abilities, learning and memory, feeding and drinking, reproductive, social, emotional, and reward behaviors in mutant mice. Throughout the chapters, new behavioral tasks and new research discoveries have been added, bringing the Second Edition up to date with the latest science. In addition, the Second Edition includes two new chapters:
"Neurodevelopment and Neurodegeneration" discusses mouse behavioral tasks relevant to neurodevelopmental diseases, such as mental retardation and autism, and to neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimers, Parkinsons, Huntingtons, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
"Putting It All Together" recommends strategies for optimizing a battery of behavioral phenotyping tests to address your specific hypotheses about gene functions.
The final chapter, "The Next Generation," examines new and emerging technologies.
Throughout the book, the use of behavioral testing equipment is illustrated with photographs, diagrams, and representative data. Examples of behavioral tasks successfully applied to transgenic and knockout mouse models are provided, as well as references to the primary literature and step-by-step methods protocols. These features, along with a comprehensive index, listings of database and vendor websites, and an extensive list of references, make this book a valuable and practical resource for students and researchers.
|Cognition in the Wild (Bradford Books)
Lowest new price: $26.00
Lowest used price: $19.40
List price: $42.00
Author: Edwin Hutchins
Edwin Hutchins combines his background as an anthropologist and an open ocean racing sailor and navigator in this account of how anthropological methods can be combined with cognitive theory to produce a new reading of cognitive science. His theoretical insights are grounded in an extended analysis of ship navigation -- its computational basis, its historical roots, its social organization, and the details of its implementation in actual practice aboard large ships. The result is an unusual interdisciplinary approach to cognition in culturally constituted activities outside the laboratory -- "in the wild."
Hutchins examines a set of phenomena that have fallen in the cracks between the established disciplines of psychology and anthropology, bringing to light a new set of relationships between culture and cognition. The standard view is that culture affects the cognition of individuals. Hutchins argues instead that cultural activity systems have cognitive properties of their own that are different from the cognitive properties of the individuals who participate in them. Each action for bringing a large naval vessel into port, for example, is informed by culture: the navigation team can be seen as a cognitive and computational system.
Introducing Navy life and work on the bridge, Hutchins makes a clear distinction between the cognitive properties of an individual and the cognitive properties of a system. In striking contrast to the usual laboratory tasks of research in cognitive science, he applies the principal metaphor of cognitive science -- cognition as computation (adopting David Marr's paradigm) -- to the navigation task. After comparing modern Western navigation with the method practiced in Micronesia, Hutchins explores the computational and cognitive properties of systems that are larger than an individual. He then turns to an analysis of learning or change in the organization of cognitive systems at several scales. Hutchins's conclusion illustrates the costs of ignoring the cultural nature of cognition, pointing to the ways in which contemporary cognitive science can be transformed by new meanings and interpretations.

Lowest new price: $62.27
Lowest used price: $43.60
List price: $82.00
Author: Brian MacIntosh
Skeletal Muscle: Form and Function, Second Edition, provides readers with a detailed understanding of the different facets of muscle physiology. Meticulously researched and updated, this text examines motoneuron and muscle structure and function. It is intended for those who need to know about skeletal muscle—from undergraduate and graduate students gaining advanced knowledge in kinesiology to physiotherapists, physiatrists, and other professionals whose work demands understanding of muscle form and function.
A unique feature of this book is that it combines basic sciences (anatomy, physiology, biophysics, and chemistry) with clinical applications (detection of disease and genetic mutations and training and rehabilitation). Each chapter ends with a section on clinical and other applied aspects of the information presented in that chapter, showing, for example, how specific defects of muscle or nerve cells can result in certain clinical disorders. The result is a thorough understanding of skeletal muscle structure and physiology.
This new edition includes the following:
-The latest research in all areas of muscle physiology
-Major revisions of chapters covering muscle contraction, muscle metabolism, and fatigue
-More than 200 drawings (many of them original) and 30 photos (mostly micrographs), all of which clarify and augment the text
-Pedagogical aids to facilitate comprehension, including key points in the margins, special interest points, an index, and a greatly expanded glossary
Skeletal Muscle: Form and Function, Second Edition, is divided into three parts. Part I presents the structures of the neuromuscular system: muscle, motoneurons, and neuromuscular junctions and sensory receptors as well as the development of these structures. Part II examines muscle function, including neuromuscular transmission, muscle contraction, motor units, and muscle metabolism. Part III focuses on the adaptability of the neuromuscular system. Among the issues it explores are fatigue, loss and recovery of muscle innervation, trophism, muscle training, and injury and repair.
The depth and breadth of the contents, combined with the practical applications, make this book the leading authority on the structure, electrophysiology, and adaptability of human skeletal muscle. It is an excellent text for students and a practical and up-to-date reference for professionals.
