Complex Analysis: The Geometric Viewpoint, Second Edition (Carus Mathematical Monographs)

Complex Analysis: The Geometric Viewpoint, Second Edition (Carus Mathematical Monographs) Lowest new price: $40.44
Lowest used price: $29.91
List price: $56.00
Author: Steven G. Krantz

In this second edition of a Carus Monograph Classic, Steven G. Krantz, a leading worker in complex analysis and a winner of the Chauvenet Prize for outstanding mathematical exposition, develops material on classical non-Euclidean geometry. He shows how it can be developed in a natural way from the invariant geometry of the complex disk. He also introduces the Bergmann kernel and metric and provides profound applications, some of which have never appeared in print before. In general, the new edition represents a considerable polishing and re-thinking of the original successful volume. A minimum of geometric formalism is used to gain a maximum of geometric and analytic insight. The climax of the book is an introduction to several complex variables from the geometric viewpoint. Poincaré's theorem, that the ball and bidisc are biholomorphically inequivalent, is discussed and proved.

Fractals, Graphics, and Mathematics Education (Mathematical Association of America Notes)

Fractals, Graphics, and Mathematics Education (Mathematical Association of America Notes) Lowest new price: $39.55
Lowest used price: $34.45
List price: $49.95
Author: Benoit Mandelbrot

Fractal Geometry is a recent edition to the collection of mathematical tools for describing nature, and is the first to focus on roughness. Fractal geometry also appears in art, music and literature, most often without being consciously included by the artist. Consequently, through this we may uncover connections between the arts and sciences, uncommon for students to see in maths and science classes. This book will appeal to teachers who have wanted to include fractals in their mathematics and science classes, to scientists familiar with fractal geometry who want to teach a course on fractals, and to anyone who thinks general scientific literacy is an issue important enough to warrant new approaches.

Author: Charles. Nash

Introduction to Differential Topology

Lowest used price: $83.52
List price: $34.50
Author: T. Bröcker

This book is intended as an elementary introduction to differential manifolds. The authors concentrate on the intuitive geometric aspects and explain not only the basic properties but also teach how to do the basic geometrical constructions. An integral part of the work are the many diagrams which illustrate the proofs. The text is liberally supplied with exercises and will be welcomed by students with some basic knowledge of analysis and topology.

Complex Analysis with MATHEMATICA®

Complex Analysis with MATHEMATICA® Lowest new price: $62.95
Lowest used price: $49.50
List price: $104.00
Author: William T. Shaw

Complex Analysis with Mathematica offers a new way of learning and teaching a subject that lies at the heart of many areas of pure and applied mathematics, physics, engineering and even art. This book offers teachers and students an opportunity to learn about complex numbers in a state-of-the-art computational environment. The innovative approach also offers insights into many areas too often neglected in a student treatment, including complex chaos and mathematical art. Thus readers can also use the book for self-study and for enrichment. The use of Mathematica enables the author to cover several topics that are often absent from a traditional treatment. Students are also led, optionally, into cubic or quartic equations, investigations of symmetric chaos, and advanced conformal mapping. A CD is included which contains a live version of the book, and the Mathematica code enables the user to run computer experiments.

A Treatise on the Theory of Bessel Functions (Cambridge Mathematical Library)

A Treatise on the Theory of Bessel Functions (Cambridge Mathematical Library) Lowest new price: $51.00
Lowest used price: $34.99
List price: $80.00
Author: G. N. Watson

The late Professor G.N. Watson wrote his monumental treatise on the theory of Bessel functions in 1922 with two objects in view. The first was the development of applications of the fundamental processes of the theory of complex variables, and the second was compiling a collection of results of value for mathematicians and physicists who encounter Bessel functions in the course of their researches. The completeness of the theoretical account, combined with the wide scope of the collection of practical examples have resulted in a book that will be indispensable for pure mathematicians, applied mathematicians, and physicists.

Space-Filling Curves (Universitext)

Space-Filling Curves (Universitext) Lowest new price: $56.99
Lowest used price: $54.77
List price: $79.95
Author: Hans Sagan

The subject of space-filling curves has generated a great deal of interest in the 100 years since the first such curve was discovered by Peano. Cantor, Hilbert, Moore, Knopp, Lebesgue, and Polya are among the prominent mathematicians who have contributed to the field. However, there have been no comprehensive treatments of the subject since Siepinsky's in 1912. Cantor showed in 1878 that the number of points on an interval is the same as the number of points in a square (or cube, or whatever), and in 1890 Peano showed that there is indeed a continuous curve that continuously maps all points of a line onto all points of a square, though the curve exists only as a limit of very convoluted curves. This book discusses generalizations of Peano's solution and the properties that such curves must possess and discusses fractals in this context. The only prerequisite is a knowledge of advanced calculus.

The Seiberg-Witten Equations and Applications to the Topology of Smooth Four-Manifolds (Mathematical Notes, Vol. 44)

The Seiberg-Witten Equations and Applications to the Topology of Smooth Four-Manifolds (Mathematical Notes, Vol. 44) Lowest new price: $47.13
Lowest used price: $25.87
List price: $52.50
Author: John W. Morgan

The recent introduction of the Seiberg-Witten invariants of smooth four-manifolds has revolutionized the study of those manifolds. The invariants are gauge-theoretic in nature and are close cousins of the much-studied SU(2)-invariants defined over fifteen years ago by Donaldson. On a practical level, the new invariants have proved to be more powerful and have led to a vast generalization of earlier results. This book is an introduction to the Seiberg-Witten invariants.

The work begins with a review of the classical material on Spin c structures and their associated Dirac operators. Next comes a discussion of the Seiberg-Witten equations, which is set in the context of nonlinear elliptic operators on an appropriate infinite dimensional space of configurations. It is demonstrated that the space of solutions to these equations, called the Seiberg-Witten moduli space, is finite dimensional, and its dimension is then computed. In contrast to the SU(2)-case, the Seiberg-Witten moduli spaces are shown to be compact. The Seiberg-Witten invariant is then essentially the homology class in the space of configurations represented by the Seiberg-Witten moduli space. The last chapter gives a flavor for the applications of these new invariants by computing the invariants for most Kahler surfaces and then deriving some basic toological consequences for these surfaces.
