"A Showcase for and a love letter to a century of amazing music" is how the creator of The Enchanted Island, Jeremy Sams, described this spectacular operatic pasticcio of music by Handel, Vivaldi, Rameau, Purcell and others. With a story based on Shakespear's The Tempest and a Midsummer Night's Dream, it was not the work of a contemporary composer, but instead, drew on works by figures of the Baroque era Handel, Vivaldi, Rameau, Purcell, Campra, Ferrandini, Leclair and Rebel. Devised by the British writer, librettist and translator, Jeremy Sams, the piece revived the 18th century tradition of the plasticcio, taking arias from a variety of different sources and setting them to a new libretto.

it. Rupert Christiansen of the Telegraph added that The
velvety smoothness of (Angela Gheorghiu s) line and tone was
something to marvel at.
The set includes pieces such as the Act I Te Deum, Vissi
d arte and E lucevan le stele. Jonathan Kent s detailed
production draws on the full historical backdrop of
Rome in 1800, a political world of control and suspicion,
beautifully evoked in Paul Brown s lavish designs. The
pageantry of church ritual, the darkness of a brooding
study with its hidden torture chamber and the false
optimism of the light of a Roman dawn all throw into
relief the love of the beautiful diva Tosca, the idealism
of her lover Cavaradossi and the deadly, destructive
obsession of the malevolent Chief of Police, Scarpia.

This extraordinarily powerful 1983 production may be the best-sung performance by Luciano Pavarotti on DVD, but when acting values are counted in, Ingvar Wixell manages to outshine the tenor star. Verdi gave the Duke two of Italian opera's most brilliant arias ("Questa o quella" and "La donna e mobile"), but he gave the deformed jester Rigoletto a depth and complexity of character that is reflected in music of great variety and enormous emotional impact: the cruel mockery of the opening scene, the self-doubts inspired by his dialogue with Sparafucile, the paternal anxieties and final despair at his daughter's sad fate, and the burning, self-destructive thirst for revenge. All these motives work their way into music of great dramatic richness, variety, and intensity. Wixell rises to its challenges, not only in the title role but in a cameo appearance as Rigoletto's nemesis Monterone.
