In 1999, renowned American mountaineer Conrad Anker made a discovery that reverberated around the globe. High in Mount Everest's "death zone," he found the body of George Mallory - 75 years after the British explorer mysteriously vanished during his attempt to become the first man to summit the world's tallest peak.

Mallory had risked everything as he set out, dressed in gabardine and hobnailed boots, in pursuit of his dream of reaching the top of Everest - which in 1924 was the last great adventure left to man. He was last spotted alive just 800 feet below the summit. Then the clouds rolled in and Mallory vanished into legend.

After discovering Mallory's body, Conrad Anker's life became intertwined with Mallory's story. Remarkably, Mallory's body was found with all his belongings intact. The only thing missing was a photograph of his wife, Ruth, which Mallory had promised to place on the summit. Haunted by Mallory's story, Conrad longed to return to Everest to lay Mallory's ghost to rest.

BONUS FEATURES INCLUDE Behind the Scenes Raw Interviews, International Trailers, Original Notes from Mallory's Expedition Team Member, Noel Odell, and more.

Relive a breathtaking journey to the top of the world with EVEREST, the spectacular giant-screen motion picture for IMAX theatres! Filmed during the infamous 1996 storm that claimed eight lives, EVEREST documents the filmmakers' harrowing rescue efforts to help surviving members of the ill-fated group. Join an international team of climbers as they scale the world's tallest peak. Witness the perils of skin-blistering cold, violent blizzards that drop the windchill to minus 100 degrees, and air so thin it numbs the mind. EVEREST will take you across creaking icefalls and gaping chasms, up dangerous, towering cliffs and into the death zone of oxygen-thin altitude. Filmed in spellbinding IMAX photography, "the most hyperrealistic format yet invented," says producer Greg MacGillivray. Narrated by Academy Award(R)-nominee Liam Neeson, including the music of George Harrison, EVEREST is a rich, dramatic story -- a daring adventure of triumph and tragedy.

Filmed in the IMAX format, this film had the luck (or lack thereof) to be shot during the same fateful and fatal climb of Mount Everest chronicled in Jon Krakauer's book, Into Thin Air, in which a group of rich hobby climbers found themselves trapped by a blizzard near the summit. The IMAX film contains footage of those people, but focuses on its own group, as they make their assault on the top of the world's highest peak. Some startling footage of the mountain and the approaches--and, as in Krakauer's book, the depiction of what is involved in this kind of adventure (particularly the pain and suffering)--makes you wonder exactly where the fun is. But documentary film is about showing you something you're not likely to see otherwise, and this movie certainly fills the bill. --Marshall Fine

Into the Thin Air of Everest - Mountain of Dreams, Mountain of Doom

Into the Thin Air of Everest - Mountain of Dreams, Mountain of Doom Lowest new price: $4.68
Lowest used price: $18.06
List price: $9.98

The incredible story of the world's highest mountain and the adventurers who tempt fate to reach its deadly summit.

Reaching five and a half miles into the sky, Mount Everest is a massive pyramid of intimidating rock, freezing cold and hurricane force winds. It towers above all other peaks and is the highest point on earth. Known as Chomolungma, Goddess Mother of the World, by the Sherpa people who live in its shadow, this awesome mountain has become the ultimate test of man's strength, endurance and will power. It is also deadly...for every five people who reach the summit, one dies trying. All who attempt its slopes risk their lives. Some survive in triumph, but many others never return from its icy heights.

This extraordinary collection is the definitive documentary of the history and mystery of Mount Everest.

Part I - "EVEREST: THE QUEST" includes the incredible stories of the early climbers, including George Leigh Mallory and Sir Edmund Hillary's legendary summit climb, and much more.

Part II - "EVEREST: TEMPTING FATE" explores the triumphant (and tragic) expeditions of the modern era and takes an in-depth view of the terrible events of 1996, the deadliest year in the history of Mount Everest (and the subject of the current bestselling book).

Part III - "THE CONQUEST OF EVEREST", is the thrilling Academy Award nominated best documentary about the 1953 British expedition that was the first to reach Mount Everest's summit.

EVEREST - Mountain of Dreams...Mountain of Doom takes viewers on the adventure of a lifetime and vividly captures the haunting beauty and constant danger of the most awesome mountain on earth.

The story of Everest begins simply enough, with the British survey of the Himalayan Range to determine if Peak 15 is indeed the highest mountain in the world. Balloonists prove that it could be possible to survive at such a high altitude, beginning the race for the peak. Thirty years of defeats, failure, and death passed before two men would stand on the roof of the world. Since then, there have been new routes to find, new nations that wished to claim the peak. The stories of these men and women and the expeditions they served is told in Into the Thin Air of Everest.

From George Mallory to the 1996 tragedy, this series explores the major personalities and expeditions covering an 80-year span. Two faster-paced videos, Death on Everest and The Quest, are paired with the classic expedition documentary The Conquest of Everest, giving the series a great modern perspective with a good background of the history of the mountain. Those who know the mountain best tell the story of Everest: the guides, expedition leaders, and legends such as Sir Edmund Hillary.

As much as mountain climbing is the story of man against nature, there is also special attention paid to the science and equipment of high-mountain climbing. The demonstration of the technological advances in clothing and equipment that give the climbers a better chance to succeed, and sometimes to survive, is presented in contrast to the equipment of the pioneers who braved the mountain in clothes better suited to a stroll in the Scottish Highlands. The film also covers the major controversies in Everest's history--the questions that will never be answered, such as did Mallory make it to the top, and the questions that have no answers, such as whether the commercialization of Everest should be allowed.

The men, the women, the mountain, the dream, the nightmare, the quest, the conquest--all these are the stories told in Into the Thin Air of Everest. Among them are the heroes of Everest who made it and those who did not: Mallory, Hillary, Norgay, Hornbein, Unsoeld, Whittaker, Messner, Hoey. This documentary captures the timeless challenge of Everest: to stand on top of the world for no other reason than because it is there. --Aaron Abrams
