Tech Talk
Aspect ratio: The aspect ratio refers to the shape of the video image. Traditional television has a 4:3 aspect ratio, which is almost square in appearance. Digital television has either a 4:3 or 16:9 aspect ratio. A 16:9 aspect ratio is widescreen and appears rectangular, which looks more like a movie screen, filling more of the viewer's field of vision for a more lifelike viewing experience.

Panasonic TH-42PX25U/P 42-Inch High-Definition Plasma TV

Panasonic TH-42PX25U/P 42-Inch High-Definition Plasma TV Lowest used price: $400.00
List price: $5,499.99
Brand: Panasonic
Model: TH-42PX25U/P

Panasonic TH-42PX25U/P 42-Inch High-Definition Plasma TV

Flat-panel, big-screen luxury is yours with Panasonic's 42-inch VIERA series TH-42PX25U/P. This 1,024 x 768-pixel gas-plasma TV offers a 16:9 widescreen dimension, photo-viewing SD and PC Card slots, and an HDMI input for direct-digital connection with high-definition sources. Its ATSC tuner pulls HD signals (480p/1080i) right out of the airwaves, however, and its QAM tuner is fully compatible with unscrambled HDTV cable reception. A standard analog NTSC tuner receives standard-definition (SD) programming, and 2-tuner/split-screen picture-in-picture gives you unparalleled viewing convenience with scalable image sizes.

The set's authorized CableCARD ability means the set will also receive digital cable television systems services directly from the cable operator without requiring a bulky, external cable box.

The Benefits of HDTV
Standard TVs (SDTVs) display a maximum of 480 lines using the interlaced scan method, which creates a picture with alternating lines of information.
Enhanced-definition TVs (EDTVs) display a maximum of 480 lines using the progressive-scan method, which creates an image using consecutive lines of information for a crisp, flicker-free picture.
High-definition TVs (HDTVs) display a maximum of either 1,080 interlaced lines or 720 progressively scanned lines for the sharpest possible image.
With a plasma screen you get true to life vivid colors like you've never seen before, extremely wide viewing angles (wider, even, than those of most LCD screens), making it the perfect screen for home theater set ups. Easy placement due to the plasma monitor's slim profile--the TH-42PX25U/P is a mere 5.5 inches deep, perfect for desk or wall mounting and freeing up much of the space that was previously lost with deep CRT TVs.

Brightness tends to be extremely uniform across plasma screens, which are also impervious to the picture distortion and negative color balances that afflict CRT monitors when placed near lighting or sound systems.

The TH-42PX25U/P's contrast ratio is rated at an extraordinarily lifelike 3,000:1, and the TV is capable of producing over 1 billion colors. Picture-enhancing technologies include the Mach Band Effect Enhancer, a Gamma Enhancement System, and Panasonic's New Real Black Drive System.

The High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) offers uncompressed digital data transmission between compatible devices, as between the TH-42PX25U/P and a DTV satellite receiver. Other connections include dual HD component-video inputs, 3 each composite- and S-video inputs, and front-panel A/V jacks for easy hookup with external devices, including an RGB PC input (15-pin mini D-Sub) offering up to 720p resolution. A set of composite-video-based A/V outputs simplifies hookup with an external A/V receiver and speaker system.

The TV's internal 2-way, biamplified stereo speakers are powered by 13 watts total per channel and use 5 separate drivers per speaker for extra richness and clarity. BBE ViVA HD3D surround processing creates authentic-sounding 3D effects from stereo speakers and exceptional sound-stage imaging, helping to ensure optimal clarity for centrally staged audio material such as dialogue. Artificial intelligence sound automatically adjusts the volume level on your TV to prevent wide variations in sound between different TV stations and types of programming.

Other features include V-Chip Program lockout, on/off sleep timers, a remote control, and closed-caption decoding.

What's in the Box
TV, remote control, remote batteries (2 AA), a pedestal base, an AC power cord, F-type coaxial antenna adapters, ferrite cores, 2 clampers, a warranty card, a customer card, and a service-center list.

Panasonic PT-47WX42 42-Inch 16:9 HDTV-Ready Projection TV

Panasonic PT-47WX42 42-Inch 16:9 HDTV-Ready Projection TV Lowest used price: $150.00
List price: $1,799.99
Brand: Panasonic
Model: PT-47WX42

See how much better home entertainment can be with a 47M-^RM-^R widescreen HDTV monitor. It features 3:2 Film Correction for movies that look their best, and a 3D-Y/C digital comb filter for a crisp, clean picture. ItM-^Rs HD-ready, so you can add an HDTV receiver and experience the excitement of high-definition broadcasts. Numerous inputs offer flexibility in home theater design, and the 2-tuner picture-in-picture lets you view multiple screens in a variety of formats, including a split-screen display.

The PT-47WX42's wide, fine-pitch screen (0.52mm) is loaded with features to make DVD and HDTV viewing as simple and as pristine as possible. The set's HDTV/EDTV display capability (1080i, 480p) lets you view high-definition or enhanced-definition TV programming from an external DTV set-top box with an ATSC receiver (not included; an external over-the-air antenna may be required). Progressive Cinema Scan (3:2 pulldown) provides faithful reproduction of film-based materials. DVD mastering introduces a common distortion when adjusting 24-frames-per-second movies to 30 fps video. Progressive Cinema Scan digitally corrects this distortion, removing the redundant information to display a film-frame-accurate picture.

Two-tuner picture-in-picture with split-screen display lets you view two programs at once by dividing the screen down the middle. Each program is shown at full height, with one program on the left side and the other on the right. Motion-Adaptive 3D-Y/C digital comb filter displays bright colors and action scenes with incredible clarity by minimizing the "color rainbow effect" in closely spaced patterns, compensating for the motion that occurs between fields. Included 10-bit, 60 MHz analog-to-digital image processing boosts conventional grayscale from 256 to 1024, to deliver four times as many shades of black and white. Digital velocity-modulated scanning is advanced circuitry along the neck of the CRT that senses transitions from black to white in the video signal. The black and white portions of the signal are sped up and slowed down, respectively, resulting in sharp black-to-white transitions. For a more film-like picture when watching movies, you may want to selectively turn off this circuitry.

Other features include horizontal and vertical edge correction, Artificial Intelligence Picture Control (continuously monitors signal conditions to maintain high contrast), Artificial Intelligence Sound Control (prevents variances in sound level), Video Noise Reduction (compares individual pixels of two consecutive fields, then removes noise), color temperature control, BBE High-Definition Sound (improves speech intelligibility and restores musical dynamic range), and simulated stereo sound (which works with stereo and monaural programs), and an illuminated remote control called the Director, which can be programmed to control many current video and audio devices.

Features:

  • 42-inch widescreen projection display with 1080i and 480p compatibility
  • 2-tuner PIP, 8-bit PIP image processing, PIP scaling, and multi-format PIP (HDTV compatible)
  • Progressive Cinema Scan (3/2 pulldown) provides faithful reproduction of film-based materials
  • Motion-Adaptive 3D-Y/C digital comb filter further enhances resolution by removing blurred edges between colors and reducing dot crawl
  • Digital velocity-modulated scanning improves the definition at picture edges

The 65-inch widescreen 65SWX20B projection television puts an enormous, theater-like screen right in your living room. Hitachi coordinated the design of all of the set's key components, from source to screen, fashioning an ultra-bright TV that delivers razor-sharp images from both high-definition and conventional content.

The set's AV NET interface simplifies both onscreen control and operation of other system components such as DVD players, VCRs, and audio/video receivers. A step-by-step onscreen wizard guides you through system setup, prompting as to device type, manufacturer, and input. A small IR transmitter positioned in front of each component--regardless of brand--provides comprehensive control of an entire home theater. The 65SWX20B comes with an additional, simplified remote that reduces the number of buttons to just 12 of the most necessary.

Inside, the set's wide-neck CRT accommodates a significantly larger electron gun, which enables much larger aperture dimensions for better control over the shape, size, and focus of the electron beam that generates the images you watch. And Hitachi--rather than letting all its advanced engineering sit idly by when you're watching conventional, low-resolution sources--created VirtualHD. Its unique circuitry upconverts analog signals to a common higher-definition standard that's a perfect match to the set's high-performance CRT, lens, and screen systems.

Unlike a conventional TV with a single cathode-ray picture tube (CRT), a projection set has three CRTs and an optical system to direct the image to the screen. The process of aligning and focusing the red, green, and blue images at the screen, known as convergence, can be affected by magnetic influences. Even the direction your TV is facing can affect convergence. This projection TV comes with unique, factory-adjusted convergence parameters that serve as a custom reference standard.

The field/frame structure of video makes it difficult to properly display rapid motion. To ensure smooth playback, additional picture information must be created in every frame. Hitachi's motion-adaptive algorithm works with just about any video or audio configuration--including wideband component, composite- and S-video connections. A DVI digital input (and IEEE 1394 with 5C copy protection) accommodates newer-generation digital set-top boxes.

The set delivers 20 watts per channel through a pair of two-way speakers with bass-reflex cabinets. BBE Mach3 bass enhancement reinforces the powerful low frequencies, SRS TruSurround simulates surround sound from any two speakers, and BBE High-Definition Sound improves speech intelligibility and restores the dynamic range of compressed musical passages.

An anti-reflective screen shield ensures smooth, even light distribution, and wide viewing angles, while Magic Focus Convergence automatically aligns the picture for optimum performance at the touch of a button.

What's in the Box
TV, owner's guide, easy-graphic guide, illuminated remote control, simple remote control, batteries, two IR mouse cables (two blasters each), warranty information.

  • 65-inch widescreen (16:9 aspect ratio) HDTV-ready projection TV; 61 x 59.875 x 28 inches (W x H x D)
  • Enhanced VirtualHD digital video processing upgrades conventional signals to near-HD quality
  • 3:2 correction and 26-point motion-adaptive interpolation ensures smooth, seamless images from any source

Sony KV-32XBR450 32" XBR Wega Flat-Screen HDTV Monitor with PIP

Sony KV-32XBR450 32" XBR Wega Flat-Screen HDTV Monitor with PIP Lowest used price: $500.00
Brand: Sony
Model: KV-32XBR450

For a state-of-the-art viewing experience, Sony's 32'' XBR« Wega« Flat Screen Stereo TV is the way to go. With DRC« Multi-Function with 3:2 Pull Down Technology, 3D Y/C Digital Comb Filter, Velocity Scan Modulation, Vertical Aperture Compensation & HD-Capable Component Video Inputs to connect to a high-definition satellite dish or progressive scan DVD, this TV delivers movie theater quality picture. And 2-Tuner Picture-in-Picture lets you watch 2 shows at once. It's enough to make your head spin

Sony's high-definition-ready KV-32XBR450 32-inch WEGA television offers a lot of screen, a ton of features, and the bright, detailed picture quality for which Trinitron WEGA sets are known. The KV-32XBR450's flat, FD Trinitron picture tube cuts down on glare and minimizes image distortion, and its wealth of video technologies ensures that you'll enjoy sharp, vivid pictures, whatever your source components.

The TV produces stereo audio with 15 biamplified watts per channel through built-in two-way speakers that border the screen. One of the KV-32XBR450's coolest features is its 16:9 enhanced mode, which--together with a feature called Hi-Scan 1080i--delivers maximum picture quality by concentrating all viewable scan lines within a letterboxed image, wasting none of its horizontal resolution on rendering the black bars that border a widescreen image.

Velocity modulation (selectable: off, high, low) improves the definition at picture edges, creating sharper images by slowing the CRT (cathode-ray tube) beam's horizontal scanning during demanding work--say, when rendering transitions from light to dark parts of an image--and speeding it up when scanning easily rendered sections, like broad dark areas. The set's three-line digital comb filter further enhances resolution by removing blurred edges between colors and reducing dot crawl (tiny, moving dots of color along a sharp color separation in a vertical line, as in a depiction of a character's striped T-shirt).

Top-of-the-line high-definition-capable component-video inputs minimize digital and line-scan artifacts from compatible video sources (480i, 480p, 1080i), while standard composite- and S-video inputs accommodate all DVD players. You can choose between multiple sets of rear A/V inputs and a set of front A/V inputs for extra convenience when hooking up a camcorder or gaming console. A rear AV output offers both fixed and variable-level analog audio outputs for hookup with, for instance, both a VCR and a surround receiver. You can label the set's video inputs and channels for easy selection.

The KV-32XBR450 offers Sony's CineMotion reverse 3:2 pulldown technology, a handy feature for watching progressive-scan movie programs in their native 24-frame format. Digital video mastering introduces a common distortion when adjusting 24-frames-per-second movies to 30 fps video; 3:2 pulldown digitally corrects this distortion, removing the redundant information to display a film-frame-accurate picture.

Freeze Memo lets you freeze what's on screen and view it in a PIP window while programming continues on the main screen. This is ideal for noting Web site addresses, phone numbers, and contact information on the screen.

Channel Fix automatically sets TV to a specific channel (such as 3) for cable box control, letting you switch channels on the cable box via the TV's universal remote control without altering your TV setting. The Control S feature (input/output) lets you use the set with other Sony components, controlling all with a single remote control, and only ever pointing the remote at the TV--not each piece of gear.

Other video technologies include Magnetic Quadra Pole (reduces beam spot distortion and improves corner-to-corner focus, as well as picture sharpness), auto white balance, Dynamic Picture Processor and Dynamic Focus circuitry, color temperature control, and vertical aperture compensation. S-video detection automatically senses and switches the set's input to match an S-video source signal.

What's in the Box
TV, remote control (RM-Y184), remote batteries, a user's manual, and warranty information.

Features:

  • 32-inch flat-screen HDTV monitor
  • Picture-in-picture capability
  • 2-speaker surround sound simulation
  • 4 A/V inputs, 3 S-Video inputs
  • Auto-volume correction, child lock-out

Dual onboard NTSC tuners offer a 12 Multi-Index-Window Display for ultimate PIP/POP convenience from the set's RF video input. View 12 channels in three rows of four images to select the one most interesting to you, or view still images of three other stations stacked along the right of the screen while you watch one program in the main portion of the screen.

Other connections include dual autosensing HD component-video inputs, assuring the best possible picture quality, whether you're viewing DTV, DVD, or D-VHS tapes, three S-video (Y/C) connections, four composite-video-based audio/video inputs. The DVI input is not compatible with personal computers.

For the set's audio, JVC employs BBE High-Definition Sound Enhancement to improve speech intelligibility and restore the dynamic range of compressed musical passages. Hyper Surround simulates enveloping surround sound from any two speakers, including the set's own stereo 10-watts-per-channel bass-reflex speakers. A center-channel speaker input lets you substitute the AV-48WP30's speakers for your surround system's center speaker, saving space and ensuring that the center-channel dialogue will remain rooted at the screen.

JVC also includes auto clock set, parental controls (V-Chip, front-panel lock, channel guard), and AV CompuLink III for simplified connectivity with other JVC A/V components.
