|Gregorian Requiem: Chants of the Requiem Mass
Lowest new price: $11.00
Lowest used price: $9.49
List price: $16.95
Some of the most moving and beautiful Gregorian chants are found in the Requiem Mass, one of the most frequently performed Masses of the Medieval period. It is this mass that forms the centerpiece of Gloriae Dei Cantores Schola's acclaimed recording Gregorian Requiem. Not only are two traditional masses included, but there are antiphons for the vigil prior to the funeral, antiphons changed in the church beforehand, as well as chants sung as the casket leaves the church. Included also is the sequence Dies irae, dies illa, best known for its inclusion in more modern Requiems such as those by Mozart, Verdi and Durufle. Thus, this recording presents a medieval funeral mass, as it would have been chanted in the fourteenth century. Gloriae Dei Cantores Schola brings a wealth of experience to the chants, as they have chanted the offices for thirty years. They are particularly known for their sensitivity to text and phrasing, and have spent many years studying the rhythmic aspects of the chants as reflected in the Laon manuscript, among others. Their recent three-part survey of the life of Jesus through the chant has won the Gloriae Dei Cantores Schola high praise from America and abroad. This re-release follows in this tradition of subtle, elegant interpretations of the chant that are most moving and worshipful.

This album the first of its kind is a double-disc project that examines the arc of Hanukkah, from a festival reclaimed by young Americans in the 1870s to its full-throated explosion in the 20th century as the Jewish alternative to Christmas. The goal of the project is to use music to examine the relationship between the two holidays and their impact on acculturation and negotiations of personal, social, and communal identity within American culture.

One day last spring while on tour with his band Guster, Adam Gardner was hanging out on the bus with friend Dave Schneider of the other band on the bill, The Zambonis. They were discussing being Jewish when Adam asked Dave if he wanted to make an album of original songs about Hanukkah-not traditional or comedic but light-hearted, spirited, rockin' songs. At first Dave thought he was joking, but Adam said, "Dude, I'm serious." The two picked up guitars and TheLeeVEes were born. Eight days later the album Hanukkah Rocks was completely written. Call it kismet, call it b'sheret, but most important, call it the miracle of Hanukkah.
Picking up where Adam Sandler left off, Adam Gardner, Dave Schneider (The LeeVees) and friends turn in an entire batch of Hanukah novelty tunes that are simultaneously hummable, at times funny and clever and played with a kind of informed garage rock spirit and oddball sensibility that will appeal to fans of They Might Be Giants and NRBQ. They sing as much about the cultural underpinnings of the season as they do about the meaning of the menorah, musing about how the hell you spell "Channnnukah" (sic), "Kugel," and "Applesauce vs. Sour Cream" (on those delicious potato cakes). Clearly--like everyone else, Jew or Gentile--they live to eat at this festive time. The fun keeps rolling as they get Adam's mom involved on the tune about the timeshare in Florida, and rhyme Madonna with Kabala, pondering how the former got into the latter, then take us to the Matzah Ball in "Jewish Girls," a Jewish singles party with "girls all shapes and sizes." Oy, and yes it does, it rocks too! -- Martin Keller

|Woody Guthrie's Happy Joyous Hanukkah

This second interpretation of Woody Guthrie's Jewish-themed lyrics by the Klezmatics--America's premiere Yiddish band--revolves around Hanukkah, and by the title, it's not surprising that most of the offerings boast a lively tone. Guthrie, the Dust Bowl balladeer, lived in post-war Brooklyn (Coney Island, to be exact), and, inspired by his mother-in-law, the Yiddish poet Aliza Greenblatt, wrote a newly found series of poems that focused on Jewish culture. Primarily set to music by the Klezmatics' Lorin Sklamberg and Frank London, the holiday lyrics come alive to prayerful Hasidic nigunim and playful klezmer freylekhs, as well as to Nashville-tinged country fare. The band also conjured several instrumentals to flesh out Guthrie's slight Hanukkah catalogue, though the funk-'n'-jazz "(Do the) Latke Flip-Flip" seems a mistake. Sequenced near Guthrie's "The Many and the Few," a somber persecution-and-renewal story song about King Cyrus's release of the Jews from their Babylonian captivity, it seems as out of place as Christmas in October. But this innovative collaboration still has the makings of a holiday classic, as appealing to children as to the parents who spawned them. --Alanna Nash
|Erran Baron Cohen Presents: Songs In The Key Of Hanukkah

"Songs In The Key Of Hanukkah" was created and produced by composer and multi-instrumentalist Erran Baron Cohen, brother of Ali G and Borat creator Sacha Baron Cohen. Baron Cohen scored the original music for his brother s film, Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan (in which he rewrote the Kazakhstani national anthem), as well as his hit TV series, Da Ali G Show, where he collaborated with the likes of Chrissie Hynde, Travis , and Supergrass among others. The record is indeed a collection of songs that brings the ancient music of Hanukkah kicking and screaming straight into the 21st Century. Recorded in London, Berlin and Tel Aviv, the songs combine klezmer, reggae, electronica, hip hop, tango, pop and other genres, all fluently woven into something uniquely Baron Cohen s. The album contains five reinterpretations of classic favorites as well as five original tunes created exclusively for this project, all sung in English, Hebrew or Ladino (Judaeo-Spanish). They are performed by some world-class Jewish singers, including Israeli superstar Idan Raichel, world-music diva Yasmin Levy and New York City-based rapper Y-Love (who actually rhymes in Yiddish!) to name but a few. Songs In the Key Of Hanukkah is set to be the premiere musical celebration of one of the world s most beloved holidays for years to come.

The Klezmer Conservatory Band is the driving force in the revival of klezmer music, the jazzy Yiddish sound that originated in Eastern Europe and flourished in the U.S. in the early decades of this century. This infectious holiday album includes new and old music, and reminiscences by elder immigrants who tell stories of the joy and music of Chanukah.

Oy Chanukah! is vigorously entertaining and always instructive, with lively musical pieces interspersed with stories and explanations of Chanukah traditions and memories from a host of sources. And as the liner notes illustrate, the expression "oy!"--like klezmer music itself--can be "a lament, a protest, a cry of dismay, a reflex of delight." Here the Klezmer Conservatory preserves the singular beauty and breadth of Jewish culture and Yiddish expression associated with the festive holy days of Chanukah. Highly recommended. --Martin Keller
