Kalimba. Origin Country: Pakistan. 2.1 lbs. Made by Mid-East. Rosewood thumb piano, 5" x 7", 17 steel keys and two vibrato holes on the back. The thumb piano originates in Africa. It is also known as the mbira or likembe. The metal keys are mounted on a wooden box that acts as the resonating chamber. To play, rest the thumb piano on the fingers of both hands and hold it between your palms. Cover the vibrato holes with your fingers. Then pluck the keys with your thumbs. As you play you can un-cover and cover the vibrato holes as you like. Many different tunings are acceptable, according to personal preference. Specific tuning of a thumb piano is only an issue when two instruments are played together; then they should generally agree in tuning. Otherwise, the tuning is subjective and should only be pleasing to the player. The longer keys have lower pitches and shorter keys have higher pitches. The keys can be adjusted by tapping them in or out to adjust their length, and therefore their pitch.

Fun, lightweight, and easy to play, our Wildwood Dulcimer has the rich sound of a mountain dulcimer with just a little bit of banjo twang. The body style of the Wildwood allows it to be played like a guitar instead of the traditional "flat in the lap" position of the mountain dulcimer. The teardrop spruce soundboard with two rosettes stands out in contrast to the long, thin rosewood fingerboard. Choose between a dark rosewood or a creamy lacewood back. The Wildwood has three string courses: a wound string at the top, a plain center string, and two plain strings tuned in unison at the bottom. Many tunings will work, but we recommend the traditional DAD to makes it easy to pick up and play. The frets are arranged in a diatonic scale, just like an Appalachian mountain dulcimer, but added is the infamous "6 1/2" fret just below the octave position allowing play in Ionian mode. The possibilities are many; playing the Wildwood Dulcimer can be as easy or as complicated as your care to make it. Explore! Special Note: The strings put on the instruments in our workshop, while playable, are put through some rigorous testing. They should probably be replaced for improved playability, sound quality, and better tuning shortly after you receive the instrument. We recommend using Roosebeck branded strings.
Features:
- Fun to play, easy to learn
- Solid spruce soundboard for a warm tone
- High quality banjo style tuners

Chord with your fingers or strum with a noter, the mountain dulcimer is a beautiful sounding instrument. The traditional hourglass shape helps separate and blend the bass and treble tones producing a wide range of tone color and a balance of sound. A soundboard of spruce and a body of rosewood combine to create a warm tone in the Arched Mountain Dulcimer. "Arched" refers to the underside of the fretboard which features two sweeping arches which help free the soundboard. The sculpted strum hollow fits a variety of playing styles, and the tailpiece anchors the loop end strings on the side, and provides a hand rest when fingerpicking. The carved scroll peg box features geared 4:1 banjo style tuners. A pick and noter are included. The fretboard is 1.25-Inch wide, the scale length, nut to bridge, is 25.2-Inch. The overall dimensions are Length 33 by Width 7.5 by Height (including bridge) 3.25-Inch, the depth of the body without the bridge is 2-Inch. Special Note About Strings: The strings put on the instruments in our workshop, while playable, are put through some rigorous testing. They should probably be replaced for improved playability, sound quality, and better tuning shortly after you receive the instrument. We recommend using Roosebeck branded strings.
