With its 60" long hardwood handle and 7" wide blade that is 8" deep, this is a gardener's tool for doing a lot of work in a short amount of time. Every culture in the world has a tool like this one in its repertory of farming and gardening implements. There's nothing sophisticated about it but it will pull up and move a lot of soil in one go and the extra long handle gives it a very long reach. This is the heaviest-duty hoe of the scuffling type we are aware of. Because of its design, it can get to invasive weeds around delicate plants below the surface without disturbing the mulch layer above. Made of heat treated spring steel, this weeder is strong enough to take out tumbleweed. The back-and-forth motion self-sharpens the blade. The 16" long wood handle has a comfortable rubber grip area and the 6" wide centered blade comes suitably sharp to penetrate tough clay-like soils if necessary. It all feels nicely balanced in the hand. If you like the style of Japanese gardening tools, these are both splendid.

The secret to the function of the Flat Hoe is its relatively low profile and smaller size. The working blade is only 2 x 6". Much smaller than most, which allows you to work much closer to the plants you are trying to nurture. The lighter weight helps a lot too. Overall length about 58".The Triangle Hoe (overall length also 58") has a triangular blade that allows you to reach very close to delicate plant stems ? choosing either the center tip or the sharper tips on either side.
