Through her many incarnations--country maverick, gender-bending pop stylist, torchy chanteuse--k.d. lang has kept a refreshing directness in her persona, which shines through in this engrossing concert video. Filmed in 1997, the 83-minute documentary focuses largely on lang's splendid performance and includes footage of backstage preparations and patter à la Madonna's Truth or Dare. Highlights are lang's sly version of "Sexuality," the over-the-top weepie "Three Cigarettes in an Ashtray," and her drop-dead delivery of Roy Orbison's "Crying," which only makes one wish lang would tackle more songs that really allow her to cut loose. While there's no denying the smoky appeal of "Constant Craving," too many of her recent songs--several included here--seem to have been cut from the same languorous cloth. But that's a small quibble; lang's fans will be delighted at this thoughtful documentary showcasing one of the singer's best high-energy shows. --Anne Hurley

This compilation of music videos produced for Jimmy Buffett since the early '70s will tickle his formidable Parrothead nation while providing pop historians with a time capsule tracing the evolution of pop video clips since their pre-MTV days. Buffett himself introduces each clip, providing personal and career anecdotes as he unspools the videos in chronological order. In the process, we watch his maturation from freewheeling Florida hippie to laid-back Everyman. As presented here, you can hear how Buffett nudged his music from an identifiable branch of '70s singer-songwriter chic toward his singular amalgam of pop, country, and rock, with liberal garnishes of calypso and reggae.

For a self-professed reluctant video subject, Buffett has managed to capture a substantial cross-section of his music visually, starting with early songs like "Pencil Thin Moustache" and "Come Monday." The early clips afford glimpses of his Key West stomping grounds before that sun-baked Bohemia was transformed into a tourist trap decorated with Hemingway, tropical drinks, and, of course, Buffett himself.

Videophiles may smile at some of the clunky production values or dated period details, but Buffett's sybaritic faithful will flock to this virtual road map of their idol's particular theme park for boomer fantasies of escape. We can hear the blenders warming up already. --Sam Sutherland

Grab your crunchy, munchy honey cakes: it's time for a feature-length movie from Australia's fab four, the Wiggles! Released Down Under in 1997 as The Wiggles Movie, this charming show gives fans a wholesome, 70-minute fix from the singing group's pre-Disney Channel years. Today is Dorothy the Dinosaur's birthday, and the Wiggles can't wait to surprise her. Alas, sweet selfless Dorothy thinks they have forgotten. As the four tuneful Aussies bop from Henry's kaleidoscopic underwater pad to Wags the Dog's house and beyond, Dorothy keeps busy by teaching a struggling magician how to believe in himself. Throughout the story, 16 song-and-dance numbers easily mesh with the plot. Lightweight action swirls to a happy ending as magician Wally the Great lives up to his name and Dorothy's party restores her faith in friendship. While 3- to 8-year-olds should enjoy the whole show, wiggly toddlers might lose track. --Liane Thomas

Sign O the Times [VHS]

Sign O the Times [VHS] Lowest new price: $77.62
Lowest used price: $11.95
List price: $19.98

Most of the songs are linked by a themed narrative and many film critics were quick to praise Prince as being a better actor live than in the previous year's unsuccessful romantic comedy Under the Cherry Moon. In total, 13 songs appear on the video - 11 from Sign o' the Times and two others - a brief piano version of "Little Red Corvette" and a cover version of Charlie Parker's "Now's the Time" (performed without Prince and showcasing each member of the band). Initially, there had been plans to include the full concert which featured many other non-Sign o' the Times songs (including "Kiss", "1999", "Purple Rain", "When Doves Cry", "Girls & Boys" and "Let's Go Crazy") but these songs were eventually dropped. "Sign o' the Times" "Play in the Sunshine" "Little Red Corvette"/"Housequake" "Slow Love" "I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man" "Hot Thing" "Now's the Time" (Charlie Parker cover by the band excluding Prince) Drum solo by Sheila E. "U Got the Look" "If I Was Your Girlfriend" "Forever in My Life"/"It" "It's Gonna Be a Beautiful Night" "The Cross"
