The book has beautiful step-by-step, highly visual instructions and child appropriate materials, included in this kit, encourage independent learning through play, and lead a child successfully through each invention. Although Inventions is designed for children 8 years and up, this title has had an extraordinary history and following. It has been used at MIT to mentor high school students in physics. It has been used at U.C. Berkeley to mentor women in science. It has been used similarly at other institutions including Fermi Lab and the University of Texas at Austin. Inventions received a rave review from the Women's Society of the IEEE. They used Inventions for camp programs for elementary school students. This was given as a birthday gift to my science-loving son. And what this kit ended up being is hugely frustrating. The directions are not very clear, the pictures helped a little more but still not so great- and it would seem I had some parts missing, since the photos shown to make the first project included items not all in in my kit, specifically the two "leads" that holds the coil on the paperclips. I had some stiff red plastic coated copper wire handy from a wiring project I did last year, which I substituted (and looked just like the leads described in the book), and stripped one side of each as they instructed... but no luck. First project didn't produce any results what-so-ever. I will not be trying any additional projects in there, because I am already in a pissed off mood because the first project was a bust and I wasted so much time on it.If I cool down a bit, and try another project with my son and it works I'll update my review accordingly.
