This humorous & popular zoological fantasy "Le carnaval des animaux" (1886)(Carnival of the Animals), for two pianos and orchestra was originally aimed as an intimate piece only for the enjoyment of the composer's close friends and not for the public audience. Saint-Saëns said he wrote it almost as a joke, so he forbade performances in his lifetime because he thought it would "damage" his "serious" reputation. The composer died on 1921, thus it was performed for the first time on 2/25/1922.
Of the thirteen operas completed by Saint-Saëns, it is "Samson et Dalila" (1877) the one which has held the stage on the 20th century. It is a romantic treatment of the biblical story with its strongly appealing scenes (and excellent milieu of the powerful & dramatic voice of the tenor Plácido Domingo as "Samson"). He also wrote 'exotic' works (you should listen the Egyptian mood of the 2nd movement ("Andante") of the 5th piano concerto).
The symphonic poems included here: Phaéton (1872), Le Rouet d'Omphale (1874), and the Danse Macabre (1874), in a style influenced by Liszt & using thematic transformation, came as an innovation for the frenchmen in the 1870's, and they have been very popular since (this music has been used on cartoons for half a century). I enjoyed them all through the convincing & able conducting of Charles Dutoit!...
P.S., Thanks for actually reading my review (so that I could make corrections)!
P.P.S., (02/17/2012) For the record, if you already own this disc, and have Sirius/XM (classical) radio, listen to their outstanding (digital) recordings of Saint-Saens. There are NO WORDS that I can use to describe the differences in Sound Quality. If there's a "true" DDD version of this particular work, I'd recommend it (as opposed to this pressing).

La registrazione di Danse Macabre forse un pochino sottotono per qualità...altre edizioni a 24 bit sono più incisive.
Saint-Saens wrote 'The Carnival of the Animals' as a joke but remarkably it proved to be one of his most popular compositions. The work displays a mischievous humor and a genuine love for animals. There are also moments of haunting beauty as in the 'Swan' and the reflective tranquility of the 'Cuckoo in the Depths of the Woods'. Written with dexterity and innate craftsmanship, it is a rare example of humor created by musical means alone.
Both 'Pheaton' and 'Le Rouet d'Omphale' draw from classical Greek myths.
Te reckless hero, 'Phaeton', drives the Sun God's Apollo chariot across the skies, loses control and plunges towards the earth in flames at which point Zeus kills him with a thunderbolt. The brilliant orchestration includes a passage that ingeniously portrays the over-confident 'Phaeton' setting off, and later, with a menacing drum-beat, shows him falling precipitously towards earth.
'Le Rouet d'Omphale' is an elegantly composed study, depicting with subtle irony the enslavement of Hercules by Omphale, Queen of Lydia.
The 'Danse macabre' started life as a setting of a poem which told of Death playing his fiddle in a wintry churchyard at midnight while skeletons dance to his ghost tune. In the symphonic poem this effect is enacted by a slithering waltz on solo violin later accompanied by clacking bones from the xylophone and finally by wailing chromatic passages from clarinet, flute and bassoon. The oboe signals dawn with a crack-crow motif.
A beautiful rendition with Pascal Roge on the piano and Charles Dutoit directing the London Sinfonietta and Philharmonia Orchestra respectively for 'The Carnival of Animals' and the three symphonic poems.
