The most amazing thing about these CD's is the excellent reproduced music quality, from the lowest bass runs to the highest sax, clarinet and guitar notes.
I guess if I had to pick one tune, typical of Miles & Coltrane it is "Bye Bye Blackbird." It demonstrates just what a giant of a jazz musician can do with such a simple tune.
"Blue in Green" was a milestone (forgive the pun) in what is now called "Modal Jazz. All modal jazz is, is bebop with fewer chord changes. It was made in 1959. It was a milestone the same as Herbie Hancocks' "Maiden Voyage." But it still all springs from the bebop era of Charlie Parker (Bird) & Dizzy Gillespie.
"Straight No Chaser" was composed by the great Thelonious Monk, another bebop musician. Monk was schizophrenic, but a genius, & perhaps the greatest jazz composer of all time.
Look, if you like or love jazz, whether you play or are a jazz aficionado, I say buy this album. You won't be sorry.
Oh yeah you'll hear other musicians on these tracks such as Bill Evans & Red Garland (piano); Paul Chambers (Bass); Philly Joe Jones(Drums) just to name a few.
