David Russell was born in Glasgow, Scotland, but his family moved to Spain while he was still a young boy so he could study music in the birthplace of classical guitar. On Reflections of Spain, Russell plays the music of his childhood home with all the joy you would expect from someone revisiting a beloved place. Russell's formidable technique is powered by a keen intelligence and tempered by an emotional delivery. He plays chestnuts like Tarrega's "Recuerdos de la Alhambra" and Albeinez's "Austurias" with a fond intimacy that rescues them from cliché. Perhaps the finest moments on the CD are Russell's guitar arrangements of four of Granados's compositions. Although Granados wrote pieces like "Danza Melancolia" and "Andaluza" for piano, Russell's thoughtful versions remind us that the folk dances that inspired them were originally accompanied by the guitar. David Russell is one the finest classical guitarists to emerge in recent years, and his playing on Reflections of Spain is a near perfect wedding of technique and temperament. --Michael Simmons

Ben Barron's "Spirit of the Guitar" in your inventory. He is a California native and one of the top 5% classical guitarest in the world.
The whole disk is rather laid back, but only in tempo. Russell really knows how to play guitar! Piano accompanies the guitar. I had thought this disk might have been too fast, but not so. It is just right.
Wonderful Music.
This and his other recordings are a testimony that he is not just one of the world's greatest classical guitarists, he is one the world's finest musicians who just happens to have chosen the classical guitar as his instrument.

Having said all that, I actually bought this CD specifically for the Albeniz! In this case, I had heard the recording on the radio, was impressed, and tracked it down to this Telarc CD. Both the playing and the recording sounded excellent when I heard it first time, and checking out the CD on Amazon and seeing several different pieces I knew only vaguely made this a nice addition to an order.
To start, the Albeniz is solid. I enjoy Russell's interpretation and playing of both the Asturias, as well as the other excerpted piece from the Suite espagnole (which is worth tracking down in its entirety, by the way!), as well as the also-well-known Mallorca. The Granados on the disc is also pretty familiar content for guitar fans, and also well played. The Malats, Tarrega, and Ruiz-Pipe pieces were nice add-ons to this disc, completing the Spanish-oriented anthology with some lovely music that isn't as well known as it should be. Throughout, David Russell's playing is excellent, and his interpretations, while not wild, are interesting. The recording is typical Telarc, Well defined, dynamic, good bass extension. Part of the wonderful sound is also due to the guitar Russell uses, which is superb, and his technique (minimizing a lot of the extraneous noises one normally hears from a guitar).
So, having been on a bit of a guitar anthology kick for a few months, I'm happy to report this disc is still in rotation, being played quite frequently. For any guitar aficionado, you'll enjoy Russell's take on the Granados especially, as well as the Tarrega. His Asturias still remains my favorite track, though, but then, that's one of the pieces I learned to play (relatively well) on the classical guitar years ago, so it has sentimental and musical import to me.
The disc gives you a great flavor of Spanish guitar music. Despite the fact Russell is a Scot, his immersion in the Spanish music world is clear. A lovely CD, and it's quickly become a favorite.
