The tenor sax giant had signed with another label when he embarked on this one-off date for Blue Note, an excursion that paid off with an enduring modern jazz masterpiece. Boasting volley after volley of smart soloing and intuitively swinging rhythm work, Blue Train is a joy, from the coolly precise ensemble entry on the opening title piece through the set's balance of elegant hard bop conversations and smooth downshifts into ballads. John Coltrane wrote four originals for the date, all of them now regarded as standards, and assembled a rhythm section including pianist Kenny Drew, Miles Davis's rhythm section of bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Philly Joe Jones, and trumpeter Lee Morgan and trombonist Curtis Fuller, both recent Blue Note recruits. Coltrane's signature sound, now fully developed but still hewing more to familiar blues and chromatic harmonies than his later modalities, is confident and expansive, and his partners respond vividly throughout. --Sam Sutherland

The blue vinyl is beautiful and a nice call out to the title. It seems as if there's pretty decent dynamics although I listen through a middle tier hi-fi system (not at all budget) that can’t delivery everything higher end records have to offer.
The real shame here is that here we are years into a vinyl “revival” with sales now far exceeding CDs and rising fast and yet amazon continues packaging records and tossing them around as if they were invulnerable to any damage; as if somehow the sleeve wasn't in itself an integral part of twist I was buying and could be sacrificed as if it were mere packaging. I have purchased many, many records from other sites and Amazon continues to be the sloppiest of all of them. Media mailers are readily available and of course easily manufactured. Given the massive number of records that get sent back to Amazon because of damaged corners and creased covers you'd think they be making strides to remedy the problem. Either it's a flimsy outer protector or a box designed to hold far greater items, where the record flops about like a fish floundering on a dock. Who knows? Maybe their delivery crew hurling records in inappropriate packaging without regard for care is just part of their efficiency and profit calculation and they figured that the maths ultimately works for them even after huge numbers of returns? I really can't tell. Sadly, while Amazon continues to offer excellent value when records do get to me undamaged (about 50% of the time) that's a pretty dismal success rate. Believe me. I HATE returning things to them. I know it costs them money and makes me feel like I'm being overly demanding but the truth is I'm not. I just want what I buy to arrive in the condition it was manufactured. Amazon, please help me. Just take care of what I buy. Package records properly.

Definitive Coltrane and high energy jazz at its very best. This particular pressing on black, heavy 180gm vinyl is outstanding in its clarity. Possibly the best record at the sub-£12 price point I've ever purchased.
The album cover is a gateleg and when opened, displays some fine photographs of Coltrane in action.
I cannot recommend this record highly enough, for its choice of tracks, quality of reproduction or outstanding value for money. Buy it... just buy it, then keep an eager eye out for that Amazon van.
