Product Description
Cream, the legendary band of Ginger Baker, Jack Bruce and Eric Clapton, performed for the first time in 37 years in May 2005. One of the most highly anticipated reunions in rock, the concert at London's Royal Albert Hall-where the band played its farewell show November 26, 1968-returned to the stage the trio that forever changed rock 'n' roll. Now the best of those historic peformances are available on Royal Albert Hall London May 2-3-5-6 2005. This is classic Classic Rock. A companion DVD is being released utilizing different takes of the same tracks.

After a 37 year absence Cream reformed in May 2005 for a series of concerts at the Royal Albert Hall, the stage of their last UK performance. As befitting a trio whose focus was always squarely on the music, they emerge to no fanfare, briefly test their instruments and launch into the perfectly apt "I'm So Glad." Drawing from each of their four studio albums, they revisit the songs for their inherent resonance and as a springboard for their instrumental interplay. There's no need to update the material, as it all still fits each of the three men like a thousand dollar suit. Bruce's vocals still soar with operatic bearing, Clapton sounds energized, freed from the production cushioning on his own recordings, and Baker, now in his mid-sixties, can still dazzle with his solo turn on "Toad." --David Greenberger

axemen in the history of Guitar playing) delivering another of his remarkable performances with almost perfect vocalizations of their timeless hits.....Adoring fans filled this historic theater and were treated to a remarkable exhibition featuring thirty five years of Rock and Roll history!
I realize critics will lambaste the acoustics, lighting, songlist, etc, in attempt to dissect, define and delineate this trio's final joyful and memorable exit as one of the 1960's induring icons....as a fledgling musician during that time (weren't we all?) I struggled to replicate Ginger Baker's driving beats as Cream's Hits were so much a part of everyone's playlist....I still feel my pulse quicken whenever I hear Sunshine of Your Love, Jack and Eric's bluesy melodies, searing riffs and Ginger's wild beats....hard to comprehend so MUCH music and incredible songs from THREE MUSICIANS!!!!!
Now, my favorite tunes and a few personal thoughts on each:
"Outside Woman Blues" as subtle and seductive as it was 35 years earlier! What an incredible melding of blues and rock!
"Sleepy Time Time" vintage Jack Bruce still savory harmonies and arrangement (I cannot listen to this cut once, I keep hitting replay.....)
"Politician" the message is as appropo today as it was over 40 years ago; one of their BEST!
"Stormy Monday" still gives me goosebumps-a stirring tribute to the great T-Bone Walker; Clapton so eloquent and heartfelt with the voice of a
Baptist Minister delivering the Sunday Sermon! Listen to the Allman Brother's version (live at the Fillmore) and behold the gift of American Blues
lovingly handed down to future artists....
"Born Under a Bad Sign" timeless and tasty
"Sitting on top of the World" Jack Bruce CAN play harmonica!
"White Room" vibrant and driving as it was almost 40 years ago
"Sunshine of Your Love" a once and forever rock anthem; Cream's trademark song! Who will ever forget Ginger Baker's pulsating percussions, Eric and
Jack's perfect harmony as well as another Clapton riff all which are emulated by today's guitar enthusiasts and Rock and Roll hopefuls!
As individuals, Cream will be the victims of their earlier excesses however their MUSIC will endure....long live Rock and Roll!
Expectations were high, almost impossibly high, given the legendary reputation of the group. However, as they explained in the interview on the DVD edition of the concert, it was not simply a replica of the music they had created four decades ago. Sensibly, they didn't try to recreate the music, no longer were they a power trio, using stacks of amps and playing at a blistering pace, whose virtuosity meant that they were improvising almost continuously. (The first example this had happened in rock/blues, although there are precedents in jazz-The Bill Evans Trio with Scott La Faro and Paul Motion.)
Instead of the power trio whose members appeared to be competing with each other, a more mellow group appeared; one that was more cohesive and unified because they weren't in competition. In these concerts, you can hear them listening and responding to each other, playing in a more mature and refined style. The highlights are the slow blues: 'Sleepy Time Time', Willie Dixon's 'Spoonful', and T. Bone Walker's 'Stormy Monday'. 'We're Going Wrong' is superior to the original on 'Disraeli Gears' and Capton's playing in particular is more incisive. The only song missing is 'Tales of Brave Ulysses', which did appear then they played in New York.
Clapton's playing has developed and Bruce's vocals are still evocative, although some of the soaring heights he once reached are no longer within reach. His fluid, dynamic bass runs are still to the fore, while Baker's propulsive style has been paired down to its essentials, hampered possibly by arthritis, but still mightily effective.
Bruce has said he would like the three to reform to work on a studio album, and if touring is out of the question, this may be the best opportunity for the another reform. There's no reason why three improvising musicians of this caliber can't produce memorable music. A few originals, some blues standards, the potential is enormous. They should produce more music together, more often, and not confine themselves to revisiting the past is a mouthwatering prospect.
More listening revealed the qualities of Bruce/Baker/Clapton in 2005 independent of the Bruce/Baker/Clapton of four decades earlier. Clapton seems to dominate, was my initial impression. But again, closer listening revealed that Bruce and Baker are right there with him. Jack is in fine voice.
Apparently Clapton initiated the reunion, although Jack had been open to one at any point all along. I think Eric must have realized that health problems might mean it would never happen if any more time went by. Jack had a liver transplant in 2003, and recovered in time for Royal Albert Hall. Both Jack and Ginger have since passed, so I thank Eric for his magnanimous gesture.
Jack Bruce created an amazing and diverse body of music after Cream, which deserved a much bigger audience. I recommend more Jack Bruce for any Cream fans who only heard Eric Clapton's records after they broke up!
