Important information
Fertilizer spikes are to be used twice a year in early spring and late fall. Using a hammer and plastic spike cap, drive spikes 1-2 inches below the ground surface, evenly spacing the spikes in a circle at the tree's drip line. Do not insert the spikes closer than 30" to the trunk.
Phosphorus runoff poses a threat to water quality. Some states restrict the application of phosphorus-containing fertilizer on non-agricultural lawn or turf. Check your local laws prior to purchase.

Anyway, it was nearly impossible to pound them in directly since the soils here in SoFl are hard packed. I had to use an old solar lantern spike to drive a pilot hole, then I found a piece of 1/2” rebar on the side of the yard so used that to create the pilot hole. After that they drove in ok.
They do the job. The tree was trimmed way back in the winter and now it’s filling out really well. The small crumbs broken off can be ground up and used on the lawn or elsewhere. I should do another round but the spikes were packed up for moving.
Only tip I can suggest other than pilot holes is that they seem to absorb moisture from the humidity here in soflo. So if not using up quickly, store in a cool dry location, not the garage, or seal tightly in a plastic zip lock. I’ll just make larger pilot holes around the young trees at new house so I can just push the softened spikes in without pounding.
