I haven’t put them in the big garden yet, but I have in the herb garden, as it started to grow a couple weeks ago. They were easy to write on, and I think they will hold up good in the rain and the sun. They will work well while the plants are little, but will be hard to see when the plants are larger. I hope that I can identify the plants then.
Cons
-When the plants get tall you won’t be able to see them
Pros
-You shouldn’t need them too much anymore when the plants are tall
-Easy to write on
-Work well in the dirt
-Will hold up in the rain and sun (I think)
-Not obnoxious looking in a garden

They also have a nice little hole in bottom which can be used to attach them to wood, corkboard, etc. with a wire. I have a few epiphytic plants that are mounted rather than planted in media and I was able to hook these labels directly onto the mounts.
The only potential downside to these is a small ridged round indentation near the top of the label on one side. This can make it difficult to write on both sides but doesn't effect me at all so I'm not marking them down for it.
Just be sure to use pencil, not pen/marker, or even better a label from a label maker. Personally I do one side in pencil and the other with the label which is why the indentation doesn't bother me.
The Rapiclip labels solve both problems.
These 6" labels are tall enough that even after being stuck into the ground a fair amount you can still easily see them. The longer 8" ones seem to get poor reviews so I ordered 400 of these and I couldn't be more pleased. No more guessing where my plants are! The bright white plastic is easily seen through all the weeds.
They are _very_ sturdy; much thicker than you'd expect from plant labels. Yet they still have plenty of "give" to them so they will survive a swipe from the hose, being run over by a tractor (depending on the angle), or being stepped on by intoxicated backyard party-goers. They might even stand up to a line trimmer, but I haven't tried that yet. If you hit some hard clay while poking them into the soil they do have a tendency to bend, so you do have to be careful at times.
The number one complaint from folks seems to be the small circular indentation on one side from the manufacturing process. This does make it difficult to neatly write on that side. If you're using a sharpie, the edges on that circle will tear up your felt tip. If you're a pencil person then the shiny surface of that circle is bothersome. But here's the trick: Turn the label over and use the other side. That was easy, eh? With few exceptions, the only reason you'd need the other side labeled is if you've taught your plants how to read. Even then, the plant probably already knows what variety it is. There's still enough space left on that side to write on if you _really_ need both sides labeled.
There's a hole punched in the pointy end that you could use to attach it to your cages or what not. But there are better/cheaper solutions for labeling stems and cages IMHO.
I use a Sharpie for writing on them because it writes so quickly and I like the high visibility. Yes, pemanent marker _can_ fade in the sun. I face them away from the sun and haven't had any problems with fading. If you'd rather use pencil then be sure to use the #1/1B type. 1B pencils can be hard to find at the local MegaMart. If your wife is an artist you can probably borrow one from her expensive pencil set. Wipe the garden dirt off of the pencil before returning it or she'll find out and unpleasant words will be exchanged. Trust me on this.
The small indentation on one side from the molding process isn't an issue and won't stop you from writing, although you may have to make a letter in separate strokes instead of one flowing letter. If that's the worst thing about this product, that's pretty damn good.
The actual writing surface is great and takes Sharpie marker and pencil marks just fine.
