How customer reviews and ratings work
Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

This is my 2nd time ordering this cd and it comes broken every time
This is the second time I'm ordering this cd because the first time it came cracked and broken. Now this 2nd cd case is more cracked and broken than there first one! CD does play music, but I pinch my fingers every time I try to open it.

What fun to add this Boris Karloff-narrated version to my small collection of Peter & the Wolf recordings. This recording is totally faithful to the original, and hearing his voice is just great. Very happy with this.

I was hoping this was the same narrator and music that my brother's and I listened to when we were very young. It is! I bought it to listen to with my granddaughter and great-nieces. We all enjoyed it very much. It's a fun story with beautiful music and a soothing voice of the narrator.

There are many, many recordings of this children's classic by different narrators and more than a few of them are very good to excellent. This is my emotional favorite. I say emotional, because there are other recordings with better sound and a crisper tempo. Personal preference as to narrator also plays into it. For me, however, there is no more thrilling, enjoyable recording than this one.
Boris Karloff expertly narrates this classic tale, with emotion and verve. This is one of two versions I grew up on as a child, the other narrated by the superb Basil Rathbone, also excellent. (I have that one as well) The Karloff recording is my reference standard, though, perhaps because of my childhood remembrance. The hair on the back of my neck still stands on end as the sinister horns describe the menacing wolf.
As it was for me, this is a delightful introduction to classical music for children. The Russian composer Sergei Prokofiev wrote this piece to tell the story of a young boy who tracks and traps a dangerous wolf, with the help of hunters and features a supporting cast of his grandfather, a bird, a duck, and a cat, all represented in the story by various musical instruments. The wolf, for example, is represented by horns, Peter by wind instruments, the cat by clarinet, etc. The story is narrated by Karloff and then given life by the musical instruments to represent the action. The story itself is entertaining and, at 25 minutes or so, easy to digest for children. That is not to say that I never find time to play it when I've had my fill of heavier fare...
Boris Karloff, for those of you unfamiliar with him, played Frankenstein (the monster, that is, not the doctor) in the 1931 classic, was the voice of the Grinch (original version), and appeared in dozens and dozens of movies. This adds a certain coolness factor to an already classic recording.
In the end, I can recommend this as a good choice among many excellent recordings. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!

Every young person should have the opportunity to hear this classic of Peter and The Wolf as told by Boris Karloff. The original release was recorded in 1957, and released in May 1957. Re-mastered by Glenn Meadows at Sheridan Square Studios, Nashville, Tn.
In the introduction we learn, This is the story of Peter and The Wolf. Each character in this tale is represented by a different instrument of the orchestra: the Bird, the flute, the Duck by the Oboe, the Cat by the Clarinet, the Grandfather by the bassoon, the Wolf by three horns, Peter by the String Quartet, the Rifle shots by the kettle drum and the big drum. For those of you who may not be familiar with Boris Karloff. He is most notable for his role in the original Frankenstein movie from the early 1930's. Or the song Monster Mash played around Halloween. But a very distinct voice. All in all this is a very enjoyable story for youngsters of all ages and an exceptional learning tool. Since it was first released in 1936 it became an immediate classic and has remained so ever since.

My kids love it, but the audio could have benefited from better equalizing. Listening to the music at a comfortable volume means the narration is almost inaudible. Listening at a comfortable volume to hear the narration blasts as soon as the music starts again.

My kids love this CD. We are doing a study unit on Peter and the wolf and this CD goes perfectly with all of the other learning material (we ordered from Gentle+Classical), the classic story, books and ballet performances (found on YouTube). My kids put the CD in the player themselves and dance to the music almost daily.

My dad was director of our headstart program & would play this sound track at nap time. It's taken years for me to find it, I bought two. It takes me back to my childhood & taught my sister and I to appreciate classical music.
