I am not a fan of the instant-darkening lens. No way can the lens darken as quick as the light is shown, and I know of people that do extensive, all day welding who's eyes burn a little each night. Many have gone back to the "old fashion" flip-up lens & I am one of them.
But each to his own.
On this shield, with a little rebuilding, you'll have a nice shield for half the money.
Build Quality and Durability:
Let's start with the build quality and durability of the Neiko 53847A welding helmet. On first glance, the helmet appears sturdy and robust. The materials used feel substantial, and the flip lens mechanism seems well-designed. However, I quickly noticed some glaring flaws. The helmet lacks proper reinforcement in critical areas, making it susceptible to cracks and breakage. Moreover, the overall construction feels flimsy, failing to inspire confidence in its longevity. Unfortunately, this was just the beginning of my disappointing journey with this helmet.
Optical Clarity and Shade:
One of the most crucial aspects of a welding helmet is the optical clarity it offers. The Neiko 53847A claims to provide a Shade 11 lens, which should offer adequate protection against harmful welding arcs. Regrettably, the lens fell short of expectations. The optical clarity is subpar, with noticeable distortions and a lack of sharpness. It significantly hampers visibility and makes it challenging to accurately assess the welding work. Additionally, the shade adjustment mechanism is imprecise, leading to frequent adjustments and interruptions in my workflow.
Comfort and Fit:
Welding projects can be time-consuming, often requiring hours of continuous work. Therefore, a comfortable and well-fitting helmet is crucial. The Neiko 53847A, unfortunately, fails in this regard as well. The headband is poorly designed, causing discomfort and pressure points on the forehead and temples. The padding inside the helmet is insufficient, resulting in unnecessary strain on the wearer's head. Even after making various adjustments, I couldn't find a comfortable fit that would allow me to work for extended periods without discomfort.
Protection and Safety:
The primary purpose of a welding helmet is to protect the user's eyes and face from hazardous welding sparks and UV radiation. While the Neiko 53847A claims to meet the ANSI Z87.1 standard, I have serious doubts about its effectiveness. The lack of proper optical clarity and the subpar shade adjustment compromise the helmet's ability to shield against intense light and harmful rays adequately. As a result, I found myself experiencing eye strain and discomfort even after short welding sessions, raising concerns about the helmet's safety standards.
Ease of Use and Features:
In terms of usability and features, the Neiko 53847A offers little to impress. The flip lens mechanism, touted as a convenient feature, feels clunky and unreliable. It often requires excessive force to operate, interrupting the workflow and wasting valuable time. Moreover, the control knobs for shade adjustment lack precision, making it difficult to achieve the desired level of protection consistently. Overall, the helmet lacks the intuitive design and user-friendly features that one would expect from an industrial-grade welding helmet.
Conclusion:
In conclusion, the Neiko 53847A Industrial Grade Welding Helmet with Flip Lens, Shade 11, falls far short of its promises. From its questionable build quality and durability to its disappointing optical clarity and uncomfortable fit, this helmet fails to deliver on multiple fronts. As a professional welder, I cannot recommend this helmet to anyone seeking a reliable and high-quality welding experience. With its 2 out of 5-star rating, I believe there are far better alternatives available on the market that offer superior safety, durability, and user comfort.
