Product Description
The Cuisinart DCC-1100 12-Cup Programmable Coffeemaker
This classically designed coffeemaker is accented with stainless steel for a look that is sure to enhance your countertop. The 12-cup carafe features an ergonomic handle, dripless spout and knuckle guard for comfortable, drip-free pouring. Fully automatic, the DCC-1100 has 24-hour programmability and 1-4 cup setting for those times when you don’t need a full cup of coffee. The Brew Pause feature lets you pour a cup before brewing is completed, while the gold tone coffee filter and charcoal water filter ensure fresh, delicious tasting coffee.
The Quest for a Perfect Cup of Coffee
It is generally agreed that there are four basic elements critical to the perfect cup:
Element 1. Water
Coffee is 98% water. Often overlooked, the quality of the water is as important as the quality of the coffee. A good rule of thumb is that if your water doesn't taste good from the tap, it won't taste any better in your coffee. That's why Cuisinart has added a water filter to the Cuisinart Classic 12-cup programmable coffeemaker. The charcoal water filter removes chlorine, bad tastes and odors, for the purest cup of coffee every time.
Element 2. Coffee
While the bulk of the liquid is water, all of the flavor should be from the coffee. To achieve the same great quality of coffee you receive at a coffee bar, you need to use the same quality beans. Buy the beans fresh and whole, only about a two weeks' supply at a time for maximum freshness. Once the coffee bean is broken, its flavor degrades very quickly. If it is not practical to buy small supplies, we recommend you separate larger amounts of beans into one to two week portions immediately after purchase, and freeze them in airtight containers. The best way to maximize freshness is to minimize exposure to air, light and moisture. So, once removed from the freezer, beans should be maintained in a sealed container at room temperature, since damaging condensation occurs every time the beans are removed from the freezer or refrigerator. Note that some coffee experts advise against freezing dark-roast beans, because freezing can cause the oils to coagulate. Other experts disagree. We suggest you experiment and decide yourself.
Element 3. Grind
The grind of the coffee is critical for proper flavor extraction. If the grind is too fine, over extraction and bitterness will result. Too fine a grind may also clog the filter. If the grind is too coarse, the water will pass through too quickly and the desired flavors will not be extracted. A medium-fine grind is recommended.
Element 4. Proportion
The cups on the Cuisinart coffeemaker measure 5 ounces. Add the amount of ground coffee that corresponds to the number of cups being brewed. Many coffee bars and the Specialty Coffee Association of America recommend adding 2 rounded tablespoons of coffee per 6 ounces of water. Some coffee manufactures recommend using 1 tablespoon per cup. Cuisinart recommends using 1 tablespoon of ground coffee per cup, but use more or less to suit your taste. Note: the maximum capacity for ground coffee is 15 tablespoons for the 12-cup coffeemaker. Exceeding this amount may cause overflow if the coffee is too finely ground.

Make 1-4 cups of coffee Water & Coffee Filters LCD & Controls- Reservoir Cover: Flips back for easy filling.
- Water Reservoir: Open the cover by lifting it up. Pour the desired amount of water in the reservoir using step water level indicator located at the rear of the reservoir.
- Showerhead: Distributes water evenly over coffee, reducing temperature loss as water passes through grounds.
- Water Filter: Charcoal water filter eliminates chlorine, calcium and bad tastes or odors from tap water. Cuisinart recommends changing the water filter every 60 days or 60 uses ‒ or more often if you have hard water.
- Filter Basket: Holds a #4 paper filter or a permanent filter.
- LCD Digital Clock: Displays the time of day and set time for automatic functions.
- Function Knob: Used to initiate programming of automatic functions ‒ Auto On, Auto Off, Program, Clock and Brew. The Auto On feature is used to program the start time of the brew cycle. The Auto On can be set for any time, day or night. The PM indicator is displayed on the LCD for nighttime program times. The Auto Off feature is used to shut off the coffeemaker at a preset time, anywhere from 0 to 4 hours. Note: To program the coffeemaker to shut off automatically, read the instructions included in the Instruction Manual under 'To program the Variable Auto Off'
- 1-4 Cup Setting: For brewing smaller pots of coffee. It provides double heating of the water, so coffee is piping hot.
- Clean Setting: Tells you when it’s time to clean your coffeemaker. Remove built-up calcification from the water reservoir, to help extend the life of your coffeemaker.
- Brew Pause: Stops flow of coffee from basket when carafe is removed (30 seconds max) from the heater plate, so a cup can be poured in mid-brew. Since the flavor extraction rate varies during the brew cycle, we recommend allowing the brewing cycle to finish before pouring the coffee. The coffee brewed at the beginning of the cycle has a flavor profile which is very different from the flavor at the end of the cycle. Once the coffee has finished brewing, stir it before serving to blend the flavors. The coffee at the bottom of the carafe will be somewhat stronger than the coffee at the top.
- Carafe: The easy pour, no drip, 12-cup glass carafe has an ergonomic handle and brewed coffee markings for two to twelve cups.
- Heating Plate: Scratch resistant with black, nonstick coating.
- Ready Tone: Signals the end of the brew cycle with five beeps (coffee will continue to stream from the filter for a few seconds after the tone).
- Power Loss Back-up System: One-minute protection in case of power fails, breaker trips, or unit is unplugged. It holds all programmed information, including the time of day, auto on time and auto off time.
- Cord Storage

Note: The lid on the thermal carafe is identical to my old unit - it's important to rinse the LID out thoroughly to clear any residue that may have slipped through the filter - particularly important if you grind your own coffee or use the (included) gold-tone "forever" filter. The lid has a ball that is hidden inside the lid, and the ball can get 'stuck' on grounds residue - which why it's important to rinse the lid after every pot.
I prefer the purity of paper filters, and I am continuing to use my flat bottom filters even though this unit has a cone-shaped reservoir more ideally-suited to conical paper coffee filters.
First pot brewed like a champ, and far superior taste to anything I get from S***bucks or P***'s coffee shops, at a much lower cost. The thermal carafe works well, and was the principal reason I went with Cuisinart once again. Also, the thermal units do NOT have an electric warming plate, which prevents over-cooking the coffee whilst it sits on the warmer.
Handy water gauge along the right side of the unit - I only filled it to 10 cups and had no overflow issues.
Why buy this? It works well - simply put - does what you want and nothing more. Has its own charcoal water filter (you can buy more from Amazon as I did) - filtering out the chlorine out of domestic water supply is VITAL to great taste. I also use a Brita water pitcher (with its own charcoal filter) so my coffee is extra filtered, and the taste reflects that.
Even with a decent size portion of Coffee Mate Hazelnut sugar-free - the temp is just right. Hot but not scalding. No warmer plate means no scalded "police station" coffee, which turns bitter just minutes after fresh brewing!
I also bought a JustInCase safety deck (available on the web) which is 2" deep, to put this unit on. The idea is in case of coffee maker wardrobe malfunction (translation: coffee going all over the countertops, floors, carpets, etc), the JustInCase unit catches all that mess in a handy tray which you can pour down the sink - and nothing goes anywhere else. The JustInCase unit showed up from Idaho in a couple of days, and exceeded my expectations.
Malfunctions can happen on ANY coffee maker, ranging from 2 paper filters instead of 1, clogged lid in the carafe, over-filling the water reservoir, forgetting to put the carafe in or putting the carafe in at an improper angle, etc. As such, the modest cost of an anti-spill device protects against the inevitable coffee overflow that can occur without warning - especially important for those who use 'auto-brew' or who leave the room during brewing.
I gave up on grinding my own beans. Those burr grinders clog up and are a PITA to clean. I buy the 3 lbs of K****kland coffee from the membership club, and Bob's my uncle.
All told, I'm extremely happy and recommend this. Would give 6 stars. BTW, the object sitting below the coffee maker in my uploaded photos is the all-black JustInCase spill-catcher! Available on the web.
UPDATE 10.28.2017: INSIDE OF THERMAL CARAFE exhibited flaking brown flecks, now suspect may have been coffee grounds that built-up over the past 27 months of use. I mistakenly thought this might have been teflon de-laminating from the interior of the carafe, but Cuisinart support says it is stainless interior, so it had to be coffee sludge. I am going to purchase a new carafe and try to do a better job of cleaning between brews.

After reading the reviews online (for this product and all of the other coffee makers) I was frankly terrified to buy a coffee maker. It seemed that every product had a different problem. I decided to cut my losses and buy a cheap 4cup Mr. Coffee coffee maker. I was about to purchase it, when I realized that between the coffee maker, the filter, and shipping (which wasn't included since the coffee maker and filters were coming from 2 different sellers) the total cost was the same as this Cuisinart (which came with a reusable filter and has a 3 year warranty!). I figured it would be a better investment to buy the Cuisinart because even if I did have problems, I was guaranteed a coffee maker for the next 3 years :)
Like I said, this was my first coffee maker, so I read the instructions. I know some people commented on it being complicated, but honestly the instructions were really clear. I've been programming it to make coffee when I wake up in the morning for 3 weeks without any problem. I usually make less than 4 cups, so I just click the 1-4 cups function and it brews a great cup of coffee! I'm not sure exactly how long it takes to make the 4 cups (cuz I normally just program it to brew 15-30min before I want to drink it)... but I think it's a little less than 5 min. It automatically shuts off after 2 hours, but I changed it to 1 hour since I rarely stick around longer in the morning (it's really easy to change the shutoff time, again just read the tiny paragraph in the instructions)...If I can do this, anyone can :)
Finally, the coffee tastes great and I haven't had any problems. No leaking during brewing or pouring of coffee. When filling the coffee maker with water I simply rest the lip of the carafe on the machine and pour... no problems. There are markings on the carafe and the coffee maker to measure water levels (They don't seem to be exactly the same volumes -- at least not for <4cups -- so I just use the markings on the machine). The only complaint that seems valid, is that it's quite tall; at first I was pulling it out from under the cabinets to fill, but I just moved it to a counter top without a cabinet over it. But I don't think this is a big deal... Lastly, the carafe and filter (I'm not sure about the reusable filter) are dishwasher safe (top shelf).... I hope this helps people!
PROs:
1) Good investment when you consider shipping, filters and 3year warranty
2) Great coffee -- great 1-4 cup function
3) Easy to program
4) Dishwasher safe carafe and filter
5) No problems so far!
CONs:
1) Tall -- could be a problem if you have low cabinets

The unit does have a warming plate, but it is only on during the brew cycle (to heat up the carafe) and shuts off after coffee has brewed. No drip spout works great and also like the fact you don’t have to loosen lid to pour the coffee.
If there is a flaw in this, it’s that the clock is not backlit. Difficult to see time when trying to set auto start in the kitchen before retiring.
