From the manufacturer
Why be proactive with water treatments?
A natural pond has a constant supply of fresh water flowing into it, such as from a stream or spring. Water also flows out of a natural pond, taking fish waste and other toxins with it. This isn’t true for most garden ponds as they are closed systems. Garden ponds also tend to be much smaller than natural ponds, so they do not offer the amount of water per fish that you find in nature. For these reasons, water treatments are necessary to keep water conditions safe for both fish and plant life and for clearer water.
Following specific steps each season allows you to create a backyard retreat you’ll enjoy all year long! For more information about what’s needed each season, check out more below.
Spring Start Up - Get Your Pond Ready!
It's pond startup time! Whether filling a new pond or re-establishing an existing pond, following some simple steps at startup will yield benefits you’ll enjoy all season long. The 3 key steps that must be taken are making your tap water safe, activating the natural pond cycle, and maintaining sparkling clean water to boost fish and plant health. Once the water temperature reaches above 42⁰F, you’ll also want to start feeding your fish again. It is important to take care of all of your plants in the spring with API AQUATIC PLANT FOOD TABLETS as they will be the key to success in most ponds! Lastly, monitor the water conditions in your pond with the API POND MASTER TEST KIT, an easy and accurate way to test 4 key water parameters including pH, ammonia, nitrite, and phosphate.
Summer - Provide Regular Care And Enjoy Your Pond
Summer is the time to sit back and enjoy all of your hard work! You’ll need to continue regular care for your pond that includes adding beneficial bacteria like API POND-ZYME and API POND ECOFIX. While everything looks great, you’ll want to closely monitor the water conditions so that you can protect the health of your pond including plants and fish. Algae grows in the presence of sunlight where there is excess nutrients in the pond water for the algae to feed on. API POND ALGAEFIX has been used for over 18 years to effectively control green water algae, string algae, and blanketweed without harming fish or plants. At this time it could be beneficial to do a partial water change, adding API POND STRESS COAT and API POND SALT and fertilizing your pond plants.
Autumn - Prepare For Winter
Performing a few simple steps in the autumn will prepare your fish and plants for the long, cold winter ahead and lay the foundation for a healthy start in the spring. We recommend removing excess organic matter (like leaves and grass clippings, for example) to reduce fish stress during the winter months. Use a net to remove as many leaves as possible. Routine addition of API POND ECOFIX or API POND-ZYME throughout the season promotes healthy water quality and reduces the amount of organic matter you need to remove at the end of the season. It is also important to perform a 25% water change, adding API POND STRESS COAT and API POND SALT to make the tap water safe and to replenish important electrolytes which aid fish during the stressful winter months.
Winter – Keep Pond Water Circulating
In cooler climates, when the water temperature drops, fish will naturally eat less than at warmer temperatures. Once the water temperature drops below 42⁰F, fish will cease eating and if they have been fed properly through the summer and autumn, they will have ample reserves to survive the rigors of winter. It is also important to ensure your pond has circulation to keep an open area on the ponds surface throughout the winter months to prevent the buildup of toxic gases which can accumulate from the decomposition of organic matter.

There was a problem filtering reviews right now. Please try again later.
I have a 600 gallon pond with a weir and filter pads and pressurized biological filter with uvc light. My pond water was thick pea soup green and full of sludge. I knew I had fish but haven't been able to see them. I tried doing partial water changes, using algecide, rinsing filters and backwashing the system but still had pea soup and sludge. I started reading reviews for Pond-Zyme and debated buying it. I ordered it and figured I was probably wasting money but didn't know what else to do.
I followed the start up directions and applied the initial dose. The next couple days I could see a slight improvement. Three days later I applied the second dose. It has only been 6 days and my water is clear and I can see the bottom of the pond. The best part is that I can see my fish happily swimming around. There is still some sludge around the sides and bottom but nothing like what was there. I feel the next two doses will eliminate that. This stuff is amazing! So glad I gave it a try and I'll continue to use it.
Last year I found and used an algeacide that worked like a charm for my little backyard pond. It kept it free of algae all summer long, which was a first for me. It is starting to warm up, so I used my tried and true again and my pond kept getting progressively greener. It wasn't working at all.
I drained my pond, refilled, then drained and refilled again and hit it hard with the algae control. Still looking terrible. I ordered this and put in the first dose. The first thing I noticed is this floats on the surface for a long time before it sinks and I was worried it wouldn't do much. That night we had a bad wind storm and one of my potted plants ended up in the pond. Great, even more mess. I netted out all the debris I could and figured I'd have to drain and refill this week.
This morning I go out, and though all the algae isn't quite gone yet, it is much less so. The water is still a bit murky, but I can see the bottom. With the algae as bad as it was, then the wind storm, I figured it would be a total disaster and it isn't. I think due to this product. I removed and hosed out the filters and one thing I noticed is that the gunk in them is darker brown in color than usual. I think this is the waste and stuff coming out. I gave it a second dose today and hope that within the next few days it is back to normal. It is only going to get hotter, I need to control it now. Anyway, I think this works pretty well, with all the issues it is much clearer than I anticipated it being today. I will continue using and update my review.

When I started using API Pondcare Pond-Zyme I realized this product is different. It really does help to keep the algae and muck in control. I now use two to four scoops per week for my 4,500 gallon pond. I can clearly see the bottom (5-1/2 feet) and have minimal problems with algae and muck. If I forget to add Pond-Zyme I will notice string algae beginning to grow and that reminds me to add it again. I notice results within 48 hours and the benefits seem to last a couple weeks. When I stay in the habit of adding a scoop or two twice a week the pond stays nice and clear.
Update: Two years later I am still using this product and am very happy with the results. For maintenance, I don't worry about the dosage instructions on the label. I just add two scoops to my waterfall or skimmer every few days. That way I don't have to remember when two weeks have passed. My 4,500 gallon pond stays clear right to the bottom - even in hot weather with a fish load.
First, the container was clearly already opened and used with 10% of the product missing and no seal on it. Second, the "barley" was pure dust without any granular matter at all which meant that application would be inaccurate and wasteful.
The "barley" powder was so lightweight that the top half of it was in the wind before I could direct it to the water surface. I waded into the pond to apply the remainder but still couldn't manage to get the dust to go anywhere in particular. About 25% of my wasted money floated away onto the lawn.
I checked the following day and there was zero indication that anything had happened to remediate the sludge. Cannot recommend such an expensive waste unless you mean to shred benjamins on your wildlife pond for a lark. THAT would be slightly more ridiculous.
