This latest Belkin item replaces a similar, older Belkin hub that warned me it was working at the older, slower speed rather than the current 2.0 standard. Obsolescent the previous Belkin drive may be, but it's one of the few that has proven effective enough to be worth keeping for several years. Some that I've disposed of, such as the Kensington Dome, no longer show among the top 100 hubs in Amazon sales. In fact, just prior to ordering this Belkin hub, I ordered the identically-described Toshiba USB 2.0 Mini 4-Port Hub, currently listing at #16 in Amazon hub sales. It's, if anything, a more solid-looking, built-for-business hub, with a generous adhesive-coated base to keep it in place while doing desk work. Perhaps I expected too much from a hub costing under ten, but the Toshiba simply failed to make contact with an unpowered Iomega 320gb drive that I attached to it. It fared better with two other drives that were powered, causing them to appear on my computer's desktop screen within several seconds after insertion. However, I was bothered both by the Toshiba's failure with the unpowered drive and with the comments on the carton which, unlike the description on the Amazon page, indicate the hub "Works with Windows Vista" but say nothing about Apple computers or Apple operating systems. So I spent two dollars less for this little Belkin item, which has a much shorter cord, is noticeably smaller and lighter, and feels like a toy compared to its Toshiba counterpart. No matter. The Belkin not only enabled my unpowered Iomega drive to appear almost instantly but, if anything, caused the two powered drives to appear 1 or 2 seconds faster than was the case when I used the Toshiba with the two powered drives.
Toshiba makes some of the best drives available, and no doubt it would perform as well if not better than the Belkin when used with a machine running Windows. For my desktop machine, where I make heavy media use of several drives, I plan to stick with a 7-port powered CyberPower, securely taped to the edge of my desk. (The advertised weighted bases are never heavy enough to enable the hub to stay put.) When used with a Macbook, however, it's no contest: this little overachieving Belkin hub rules. ( I notice some rather wide variations in its price. Try not to be in a rush, and simply wait until it's available through Amazon Prime)
My situation is somewhat unique.
I have an OPPO BDP-93 Universal Network 3D Blu-ray Disc Player which has two USB 2.0 ports, one on the front of the unit and one on the rear. The rear port is used primarily for connection of the Wi-fi antenna (powered via the USB port), necessary if you are, as I am, using Wi-fi for the Oppo's Internet connection. The front connection is primarily for external hard drives used when operating the Oppo as a media center (which is how I use the Oppo most of the time).
But I wanted to plug a Western Digital My Book for Mac 1 TB USB 2.0 Desktop External Hard Drive which has its own AC power supply into the rear USB port and leave it there permanently along with the Wi-fi antenna (leaving the front port available for other drives) so I bought this little hub.
With both items connected, the hub works perfectly and both of the devices function normally.
Now in at least one previous review, I had read that USB 3.0 devices do not work with this hub. I own several Western Digital My Passport Essential SE 1 TB USB 3.0 Portable External Hard Drive (Black) ; these units are powered by the USB port.
I left my two previous devices connected and I added one of these USB 3.0 drives to the hub.
It functioned perfectly; the hub displayed both of my hard drives and the Oppo remained connected to the Internet via the Wi-fi antenna. So, as is evident, two USB-powered devices (the antenna and the drive), along with the AC-powered drive were connected and all of them worked.
And a USB 3.0 USB-powered device works perfectly through this hub, at least with my Blu-ray player.
Naturally the speed of transfer is only that of USB 2.0; the Oppo's ports are only USB 2.0. But for music and HD video, USB 2.0 is all one needs.
Then, just for fun, I connected a second WD My Passport Essential USB 3.0 drive (so I had four devices connected, two USB 2.0 and two USB 3.0, three USB-powered and one AC-powered). This second USB 3.0 drive was initially recognized too but, when I closed it and went back into the Oppo's menu, only the first WD My Passport (3.0) and the WD My Book (2.0) were shown.
I turned the Oppo off and then on again and, as before, all three drives were shown but, again as before, when I closed one of the My Passports out, only the two other drives were displayed. (The antenna remained fully functional at all times, as did the AC-powered USB 2.0 drive.)
It appears to me that I can connect three items to the Oppo, its Wi-fi antenna, a self-powered USB 2.0 drive, and a USB-powered USB 3.0 drive, and these all work perfectly, but I cannot reliably connect a fourth device (another USB 3.0 USB-powered drive).
This is certainly not important for me at all, nor, can I imagine, for anyone else; I tried this just as an experiment (and note that I did not use the front USB port at all). I will be keeping the powered WD My Book (USB 2.0) permanently connected through this hub along with the Wi-fi antenna; when I wish to use one of my WD My Passport USB 3.0 drives, I'll just plug that one into the front USB port (as these are portable, I remove them from the port when they're not in use).
I have seen some complaints about the longevity of this product. I cannot comment about this just now as I received mine only yesterday. But Belkin offers a "Lifetime Warranty" (though there were no details enclosed in my package). Of course, as it would cost almost as much to mail a defective hub back to Belkin as it would to just buy a new one, I'm pretty sure that few, if any, people will use the warranty.
I must say that I have owned another hub (a different brand) for ten years now (it's so old that it's only USB 1.1) and it has always worked perfectly. So I am somewhat confident that this hub will last for a while too (hubs are, as computer accessories go, relatively simple affairs). Please take into account this hub's extremely low price: I'm going to order a couple more of them and even if one (or more) lasts only a year or two, I won't feel that I've been "taken."
Please note again that I am not using this hub with a computer; I am using it with an Oppo BDP-93 so my situation may or may not apply to you. However I feel sure that my comments would apply when using this hub with any Blu-ray or DVD player which has a USB input.
Thus I highly recommend this very inexpensive Belkin USB 2.0 hub. Thank you for reading this review and I hope it has been of some interest to you.
