But for DSLR cameras, I've found that, for me, it is best to stick with the brand batteries, because they tend to be more reliable in operation, tend to have longer life cycles, have a dependable charge for maximum shooting on location, and tend to work properly with the camera's computer-based battery readouts (such as Sony's battery icon display, as well as the estimated amount of minutes display, both of which can have trouble with third-party batteries). They are indeed more expensive, but they can be relied upon to a greater extent.
Sony's NPFM500H battery here is a bit hefty compared to earlier variants, but it has an excellent charge capability. In fact, it seems so good that I doubt I'll purchase more than two extra copies, because it seems unlikely that I would go through three of them in a single day of shooting. Two might even be enough, but I like to have a backup of my backup!
The battery is a genuine Sony, and you know that because the battery arrives in a blister pack that must be cut open, and contains the Sony factory hologram, so it's about as sure as you can be that this is a genuine Sony battery. Five stars.
Note:
Remember that, if you are shooting in freezing conditions (or even near freezing conditions) the amount of shots you can take from a fully charged battery may drop quite significantly. This is not a flaw of the battery, but is generally true of all batteries used in these conditions.
Charged up nicely to max minutes -- displays as expected. Also -- as advertised "Capacity Has Been Increased By 3% Over Previous Model" -- I do see some additional minutes I never attained with the original battery that came with the camera.
Charge is holding nicely.
I have had mixed luck with ordering these via other offers/sellers. IE: One claimed to be OEM, packaging was new/convincing, but performance just wasn't there.
Some other other offers exist for replacement (non OEM, non Sony) and aren't too bad at all (pls see my other reviews).
But if you're squeemish about non-Sony replacements, then I have to tell you I am pleased with this purchase - it's a champ.
the problem is that true *Sony* batteries are expensive, and valuable, and there's a huge market in counterfeit Sony infolithum batteries.
If you buy one off the 'net be sure to keep the associated paperwork because until at the very least, you actually charge it and shoot it and it lasts for 500 shots or so, you won't know that you've gotten a good one.
I'd be very suspicious if it's brown not flat-black. I bought two through Amazon here, through different suppliers, one is black (like the one that came with the camera) and seems to work ok, the other is dark brown and won't even work with the camera. Unfortunately I forgot which one came from which supplier so I couldn't return the fake one. Still I ended-up paying $50 for one battery which costs $75 retail.
For an example, you ask yourself, "Do I need to charge my battery?", when you plan to go out with your camera with 40% left of your battery. If you don't charge, you may miss a moment because your battery is dried. If you charge, you have a fully charged battery but you wasted your battery lifetime and charge cycle, because you will charge more often. You are not utilizing the battery charge until it is 0%.
A big recommend to all Alpha users who frequently travel and cover an event.
