17" Grate for a burning barrel
5 Stars
17" Grate for a burning barrel
I was needing a grate to put in my burning barrel ($20), spaced up about 8" from the bottom to help keep the burnable's above a draft opening at the base for better flame acceleration. With some ingenuity, i use rebar ($6 for 10') cut into (4) 27" sections to make a support base for the grate to set upon. Because of the material thickness of the grate and rebar, these will last about 4 - 5 years. Steel barrels around here go for about $5 ea and $15 ea with a cover and last for about 18 to 24 months. So the overall cost is ~$15 per year or ~$60 over 4+ years. NOTE: Recommend using a steel barrel cover to keep out the elements when it's not in use. The cover will last forever and will help extend the life of the burning barrel. My draft plans are included.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for Akorn Kamado Grill - Updated
Reviewed in the United States on March 31, 2023
Update - 4/12/23:
So after around 2 weeks of using this grate - it is literally everything I had hoped for - and has rendered two other accessories completely obsolete.

This grate is PERFECT for setting up a 2-zone cook area on your Kamado grill. Something that I had previously purchased another accessory for - but at TWICE the price.

I had also ordered another accessory to raise or lower my charcoal grate directly from the manufacturer - again - this renders that product useless.
This fits perfectly under the top grate and at a distance that is ideal for searing and 2-zone cooking - with no bars sticking out of the top grate. I can't stress enough - if I had thought about this first, I probably would have saved $50+ dollars.

If you're on the fence - get it - it's $20 and is likely the only accessory you will need.

Original review:

As another reviewer wisely mentioned - this charcoal grate is a perfect fit for the Char-Griller Akorn Kamado grill.

The tabs where you would typically place your heat deflector stone is a perfect fit for this 17" charcoal grate.

This is ideal for times when you want to use direct heat searing on steaks, burgers, hot dogs - or really any food that you want to cook directly over the charcoals.

I haven't actually cooked anything over this yet - but I can safely say it's 5 stars because it is well built and a perfect fit - and all it has to do is hold my charcoal - which it absolutely will.

If you have an Akorn Kamado grill - and you want your coals up close to your cooking surface - you can't do much better than this grate.

It's also a Weber - so you know it's built to last.

10/10 if I could rate it that high.

Highly recommended!
