The chain is scary quiet after a fresh cleaning and lubing. It shifts well and has shown little wear in the 1500 miles I currently have on it. There is some stretch at this mileage and also due to my spirited riding style and climbing, but I anticipate a good 1000 more miles and that is enough to get me through the Fall before I put the bike away for the winter. I will definitely be re-ordering this chain when it's time to put a fresh chain on in the Spring and start up my riding season again.
I'm convinced that all those hollowed links and pins aren't a gimmick, but they aren't where us everyday riders need to be spending the extra bucks on our bike maintenance. This is by far the most popular chain and having a master link that you can take apart 3 times or so to break the chain down and give it a thorough cleaning while also tuning and cleaning up the bike is a major plus that shimano and SRAM chains can't offer.
UPDATE: I now have over about 2000 miles on this chain and it is performing flawlessly. I checked it for stretch and I wouldn't say there is none, but it isn't much for this mileage and my abusive on the chain riding style. I have maintained this chain the same way I did the more expensive and perforated link KMC chain and there is much more stretch and movement between the links. Not sure what different materials they used to make this less fancy chain, but it is definitely winning in the durability, quiet, and value categories. Thought about trying a fancy gold colored hollow pin and perforated link KMC chain for my next chain, but after seeing how little this one has worn I am going to stay with this one for sure!!!
I've used them for my road bike but they don't last as long as the much more expensive options so you need to replace them more frequently - probably get about half the miles out of these as a real Campy chain. I still think it's worth it though because they are so affordable.
They work and fit really well and the quick link is fantastic. I buy a few extra quick links (you can't reuse them too many times) and periodically take the chain off and soak it in a cleaner - much easier than trying to clean the chain while it's on the bike.
Second chain skipped badly until I replaced the new KMC missing link with the link from another 10S chain. Cured the problem. Tried the KMC missing link on my other 10S chain, which had not been skipping, and it skipped badly with the new KMC missing link installed in it. Examining the link, it is 10S and I see nothing wrong with it. It installed as easily and securely as all missing links do. Why the skipping? I am clueless.
The lesson is to keep other missing links handy and try them if the new chain is skipping.
I figured the KMC X-10 would do the trick. It is about half the weight of the old one. It is also 2 links short of the original 118, but it looked to me that it would not matter and it did not. It fits the classic bike perfectly and works in all gears. The beveled edges shift MUCH better, too. And it is quiet.
