Troubleshooting Tips - WS-9160Uv3 Wireless Digital Thermometer
"NO" for OUTDOOR? lost connection, Hold SENSOR button on display for 2 seconds to begin searching. (station searches for 3 minutes every hour to reconnect)
Bar icons will flash while searching, icons will be constant (not flashing) when connected.
WHY DOES TEMP Come and Go? Radio Frequency (RF) can temporarily go out in high humidity or certain conditions. Please wait 2-4 hours for it to reconnect on its own.
RESISTANCE/DISTANCE (walls, windows, metal) reduces range and could cause interference -Proper distance (up to 330ft/100m without obstructions)
IF NO CHANGE after 30 minutes:
1. Bring sensor 10 ft from station. (recommended batteries with expiration date 6 years in advance of current year for best performance. TIP: Avoid rechargeable or lithium brands in display
2. After 15 minutes, move sensor to next room (1 wall separation) from station for 1 hour.
3. If no connection loss in 1 hour, move sensor just outside. After another hour, continue moving sensor back to original location.

Most people forget how to program and reset but I do this 1-2 times a year for all (6) of my remote units. Also, mixed, old, or cold batteries affect these negatively. I do not recommend Lithium batteries (like Energizer) or rechargables, for any units like this. I recommend Costco Kirkland batteries. This unit works very well despite bad reviews! Just read the instructions and understand them and get some experience.
Expect any device like this to give you 'an idea' of the temperatures, but do not look for ACCURACY unless you spend hundreds or thousands of dollars. Even AccuWeather, or, The Weather Channel, is not exact, and all of the weather channels and gadgets can vary quite a bit, especially since their sensors are located in different places (can be miles apart) i.e. North Hollywood, CA, temps. can be sensed from Burbank, Van Nuys, L.A. or even hot Woodland Hills.
Most of the bad reviewers have poor expectations or lack experience in using these devices. One does not get 'accurate' with 'inexpensive', and, you do not hire technicians to adjust your settings or set these up for you. 'So what' if it is off 3 degrees, if it is around 20 it is cold, if around 90 it is hot? If you are around 70-80 it is going to be comfortable. The temperature, and barometric pressure, can vary a lot in just 100 yards, or in sun, or shade!! A major internet weather station takes our temperature reading from the nearest airport, 20 miles away in a valley, which varies a lot from our temperature near the mountains, locally. Expect an 'idea' of the temperature, not 'accuracy', and these will work fine. And, save the instructions for resets when you change batteries (change the remote first). Protect the remote from rain, wind, sprinklers, and damage.
I bought a second unit in July 2013 and it works great! I made changes above. Both units have easy-to-access batteries; no small screws - thumb slides or latches, which are quick and easy. Some other units have small screws to remove. I recommend freezer zip-lock bags to protect them.
I purchased the digital thermometer and two senors. New Duracell alkaline batteries were used. All three units synced perfectly and the temperature readings were big and bold. Exactly what I wanted to measure the temperatures in the garage, attic and the outdoors. I was very happy.
Two weeks into the installation, the screen on the temperature reader went dark. I could sill see the sensor readings on the screen but they were very faint. I emailed La Crosse Tech and asked how long batteries were to last. I was told from 12 to 18 months.
I replaced all the batteries in the three units with new Energizer alkaline batteries.. Once again all three synced and worked perfectly. I re-installed the sensors in their spot and everything looked good. I was happy once more.
A week in to the re-installation, the temperature reader stopped giving the temperature readings of the sensors. Where the sensor readings were on the reader were now black bars. I watch for about three days and the sensors never connected back to the thermometer reader. About three days into watching the reader to see if the sensors eventually connected, an "RX" appeared on the screen of the reader. I looked up what "RX" meant. It meant that the batteries in the sensors were low. I was discouraged. Not in a million years was I going to climb into the attic to get one of the sensors, buy new batteries for the three units and re-install every couple weeks.
I called La Crosse and told them what was happening. I was giving a Service Ticket number to have all three units sent back to the company to see what was wrong. I just got back from the Post Office where I mailed back the units to La Crosse at a cost of $4.00.
If and when I get the temperate reader and two sensors back and they work as they should, I will be excited. And I will log back into Amazon and change my 1 Star rating to 5 Star.

I received the temperature reader and two sensors back from La Crosse on 11/27/13. In the package was a note stating that the two sensors checked out to be working. The temperature reader was bad. The reader was replaced. I synced both sensors with the new reader. They synced and worked perfectly. All three are in place and working. Now to see if they last more than two weeks.

The replacement reader has been working perfectly for a month. I really like this unit and so glad that it is working perfectly, exactly what I hoped for. I am changing my rating to a Five Star from the One Star that originally rated.
The Bad: The following may not matter to many users, but it did to me: I found that reading & resetting the recorded "daily high" and "daily low" temperatures was awkward, it even involved manipulating buttons that were out of sight. My previous indoor/outdoor unit (many years older) was much more user friendly in that respect. Although this is an apparent successor model, I consider it to be a step backward. That's unfortunate, because I like it well enough otherwise, and my aging eyes sure appreciate the larger digital display.
The Ugly: The model number displayed on the product box matched the model that I ordered, but the unit inside the box was NOT the model that I ordered. Granted, the two models are identically priced and differ only in their frequency of operation (something I only learned through considerable research). In this case it was not a deal breaker because the frequency of operation is not a critical issue for me. However, others may consider such arbitrary product substitution to be misleading and even fraudulent. I won't go that far, but I do think that sort of thing ought not be perpetrated on consumers.
