    Easiest Router to Set-up Yet!
I ordered this router to install in a Fitness Facility where I live. First, I configured it at home to make sure that it was working and fast enough for several people to log-in at the same time. I changed the router name and password for user log-in (this comes preconfigured and it is no longer standard for the WiFi, though it is still the Netgear standard ADMIN with password log-on for the browser-based interface which is located at the (now) standard Netgear URL http://192.168.1.1 . Changed the DNS to OpenDNS and was extremely impressed by the available Parental Controls which use OpenDNS as the gatekeeper, should you decide to download the configuration "wizard," which if memory serves was only about 371KB. If interested in locking down a shared public WiFi router, or utilizing easy to configure Parental Controls backed by OpenDNS dot com.So after testing this router in my home, I could see that it was almost as fast as my NETGEAR Wireless Router - N600 Dual Band Gigabit (WNDR3700) using speedtest dot net (java-based interface). NO - you could NOT use this router for HiDef video streaming (I don't think), but you can use it for streaming to some iPads and smartphones.I decided not to install any parental controls, but did decide to put everyone in the Fitness Center on the guest network and enable WiFi isolation in case staff in the facility wanted to use wireless with some modicum of privacy from clients. So for the acid test. It turned out that there was an Arris commercial cable-modem in the facility with 4 RJ-45 Ethernet connectors available. I unplugged the Arris cable modem. Then I pulled an existing computer from Ethernet position 1 on the cable modem, plugged the Netgear router into position 1, plugged the previously connected computer into position 2, and plugged the cable modem back in. After sync was established, I plugged in the Netgear router which went through self-check, then began broadcasting its SSID. Myself and available staff ran around to the furthest corners of facility, including bathrooms, and every location had at least 2 of the available 3 bars on the WiFi icon on our phones showing. Mission accomplished!I am writing this after the router has been in place and in use by the clientele and staff for 8 days. So far it is a thing of beauty, with no complaints, and no support telephone calls.I have been using Netgear equipment since I first installed wireless in my home about 14 years ago. Some things I have learned.a) NEVER EVER buy version 0 or 1 of a Netgear router as it likely contains alpha or beta firmware and software.b) ALWAYS go online after bringing up the router to see if there are any firmware updates on the Netgear site.c) Always start with the Netgear firmware and software.**If you are technically capable and the modem is not performing up to expectations, you can search for "gnu license router firmware" and then read about router projects. Be sure and check compatibility for your particular router AND version, especially with Netgear, before flashing new firmware into your router.Compared to previous Netgear routers, this router was truly plug and use. However, I recommend ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS, change the administrative password, change the SSID name, and then STOP broadcasting the SSID - except in public places like the above fitness center.Happy Trails.
