Product Description
Make connections that last! Stahl Tools SSVT variable temperature soldering station provides the adjustability demanded by professionals, at a price that enables anyone to solder better. Total control over a soldering iron's heat to ensure perfect electronic terminations every time, no matter the job's size. Many different soldering tasks are accomplished easily by using the SSVT's adjustable 5 to 40 watt (150DegreeC to 450DegreeC temperature) adjustment. The lightweight pencil design features a fatigue-reducing rubber grip, and a Bakelite-ringed holder keeps the iron at the ready. A field replaceable, precision ground, iron-plated solid copper tip provides maximum heat transfer, minimizing cold solder joints. Includes 1.5 mm conical soldering tip and cleaning sponge. Additional tips available for a variety of soldering applications. Tip replacement/cleaning should be done only when the iron is at room temperature. The tip can be changed/replaced simply by unscrewing the knurled nut from the barrel assembly. The station must be switched off and allowed to cool before and during this operation, as damage may result if the system is left on without the tip installed. After removing the tip, blow out any oxide dust that may have formed in the tip retaining area of the barrel. Avoid getting debris in your eyes. Replace the tip and screw the retaining knurled nut onto the barrel assembly; tighten only finger-tight. To avoid burning your fingers, pliers should only be used to tighten the nut if it becomes loose when the iron is hot. Care should be taken not to overtighten, as this can damage the element. The iron should be placed in its stand when not in use. If the supply cord becomes damaged, it must be replaced by a qualified service technician. The outer case of the iron or station may be cleaned with a damp cloth using a small amount of liquid detergent. Never submerse the unit in liquid or allow any liquid to enter the case of the station.

"...The only upside is Amazon's wonderfully easy RMA process." Read more
Customers are mixed about the temperature control of the soldering station. Some mention that the temperature controls works in their favor, keeping the temperature at the level they want. However, others say that it's hard to heat and cool the device, the barrel gets very hot, and the heat dissipation is not effective.

Mine didn't need anything to work well out of the box, there was no smell, etc. Before this I've only used pencil soldering irons. I work on guitars so in some ways not that demanding, but hard enough to do a good job needing a few different types of soldering joints and often the angle to hold the iron is very limited.
Put simply, this has made my soldering jobs look better, which means better connections. I found the sweet spot in the temperature for how I like to solder and the solder I use, and adjust it up and down a bit depending on what I'm soldering.
For soldering to the back of the pots (potentiometers) I still use a 40 watt pencil with a larger chisel tip than what I could put in this iron.
I don't have a lot to compare it to, a few cheap pencil irons, but the tip has held up well and has not burned up no matter how long I leave it on. That might have to do with having it at the right temperature for what I do and not up full.
If I was to complain about anything the sponge is close to worthless, but since I don't use it, it doesn't matter to me. The cord tot he iron could be more flexible. I'm always pulling on it to get some slack.
For some a better iron is easy on the budget. But for some, not so much when a project/hobby already nickle and dimes you to death. If that is you, or you need an iron to use once in a great while, this is the cheap adjustable iron to get. For the price why even get a pencil iron.
Never had a problem with the unit burning up or smelling. Plugged it in, turned it on and heated, went to work soldering a test kit. After making my own dumb mistakes, I went back and fixed the poor job with wick. Kit works fine and I couldn't be happier. This $20 iron is perfect for now. The total inital investment ran $40 for all the solder, wick, kit, and iron. But over all, the kits I will build will save me over $80/kit. One of those kits pays for this iron.
Do not hesitate. The unit I have must have been quality inspected and recent orders show happy buyers. I may upgrade to a more powerful iron someday, but this will do for my beginner hobby. Cheers!
Update *** 7/15/2013 ***
Well, the iron completed 3 more kits and died half way thru the first kit. Sadly I called the company to ask about a repair. They directed me to Amazon, who sent me a free return shipping label. I was credited my purchas minus a $4 restocking fee. My experience was very positive thru Amazon and I do believe I received the $4 use out of the iron. I updated to a much higher end unit with a digital temperature readout and more tips included.
I leave my 5 stars up there due to 1) Amazon customer service, and 2) The unit performed well while it was in use. It did the job. I'm most happy I took the steps to return it even tho Amazon may have denied it.
"Variable temperature" settings are very "optimistic", the number labels on the "base" of the station are supposed to equal temperatures in Celsius degrees(with 450* C being the "max temperature"). But I doubt you can get more than 650* F(about 345* C) out of this station. More realistically it is a variable wattage station, likely with around 40 Watts max output(maybe less).
The provided conical tip was not sufficient for my needs, I had to buy the additional tip kit with the chisel tips that I need. Unfortunately when I bought this station 1 year ago I was unable to buy the tips separately, only as a kit of 4 tips(which means I was spending money on tips I did not need), after checking the Parts Express website they are still not selling tips individually. The tips are better quality than most available in this price range(which tend to corrode and degrade after a few hours of use). The tips are mostly made of a ceramic material with a metallic "cone" which melts the solder. When the chisel tips started to show signs of wear I ordered what I thought were similar tips for a similar station(sold by MPJA), they unfortunately turned out to be too large in diameter. So this seems to indicate you have to buy tips only from Parts Express. Similar situation with replacement parts, as far as I know - they don't exist.
The Iron needs about 60+ seconds to "warm up"(with the "temp. knob" set to 450). The temperature though does not remain stable, it seems to fluctuate. I keep it set to around 400, any setting below this sometimes does not melt solder(especially the "lead free" solder). This station seems to work best with frequent "on-off" cycles. That is I use it for 5-10 minutes, then turn it off when not in use, then turn it back on for a few minutes when I need to use it again. This prolongs tip life and keeps the temperature at the level that I want.
Perhaps it deserves 3 stars, but I will give it 4 for the relative longevity of the tips(compared to similar priced Weller products), which have lasted me almost a year.
