A must see...
Under the watchful eye of her handler Bob and a kind surrogate mother figure “Amanda” played by Anne Bancroft (The Graduate), Maggie is transformed into a superbly-trained and dangerously beautiful government assassin. Tasked with a number of covert assignments, Maggie operates under the code name “Nina” after her favorite singer, Nina Simone. Working under unofficial cover as a computer expert with the alias “Claudia,” Maggie travels to Los Angeles and takes up residence at Venice Beach where she meets a young, charming photographer “J.P.” played by Dermot Mulroney (Young Guns) who connects with her at the store and over dinner they fall madly in love. It is here that Maggie finds herself and desperately begins to seek a new life away from the lie that she’s living as a contract killer for Uncle Sam.
I found this movie to be decent for a relatively unknown action thriller of the 90’s. 1993 was ruled by summer blockbusters like Jurassic Park, Free Willy and The Fugitive. However, “Point of No Return” makes for an entertaining spy thriller with a powerful female heroine, Bridget Fonda who is front and center in a role traditionally garnered by leading men. Bridget Fonda combines the femininity of Sandra Bullock in Speed and the tough-as-nails action star flare of Sigourney Weaver in Aliens. The film is Rated-R for language, violence and sex but I found most the sex scenes quite tame compared to the almost pornographic portrayals of today. 1993 was a more conservative time and if a film like this was released now, it would probably get a PG-13 rating. I would have like to have seen more interviews with the cast on the Special Features rather than limited Production Notes and a Trailer. Overall, it’s still a very good movie.
The film follows the story of Maggie, a young woman who is recruited by a secret government agency to become a skilled assassin. As she embarks on her dangerous new career, Maggie must navigate dangerous obstacles and fight for her life.
One of the standout features of "Point of No Return" is the performance of its lead actress, Bridget Fonda. Her portrayal of Maggie is both compelling and nuanced, showing a range of emotions that make her character relatable and engaging. She handles the physical demands of the role with ease, making for a believable and exciting action hero.
The film's plot is also well-crafted, with plenty of twists and turns to keep viewers engaged. The pacing is tight, with plenty of action and suspense to keep the audience on the edge of their seat. The supporting cast, including Gabriel Byrne and Harvey Keitel, deliver solid performances that add to the film's overall appeal.
In terms of the Blu-ray release itself, the picture and sound quality are both outstanding. The high-definition transfer truly brings out the film's impressive visuals, and the sound mix is immersive and impactful. The release also includes a number of bonus features, including behind-the-scenes featurettes and interviews with the cast and crew.
In conclusion, "Point of No Return" on Blu-ray is a must-have for fans of classic action thrillers. Its engaging plot, strong female lead, and impressive action sequences make it a standout in the genre. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for an exciting and entertaining viewing experience.
