Size and Weight:
The size of the keyboard is significantly smaller than that of other wireless keyboards. This is not due to a bunch of small keys crammed together on a small footprint but rather because of a few smart design choices made by Microsoft. The most significant loss of size is due to the loss of the number pad. This may be a deal breaker for some people who use the number pad. Given my uses (running recording software, and typing research papers) the number pad on any of my keyboards is hardly ever touched and certainly not enough that being forced to use the number row is an inconvenience. Again, this comes down to how an individual uses their keyboard and what they use it for.
The next design choice was the loss of dedicated arrow keys. Instead, there is a single directional key that can be pressed in any of the following directions: up, down, left, right. This is taking some getting used to because as a frequent writer (between school and personal) I use the arrow keys a lot. It takes a little more time to navigate through text because I have to actually look at the keyboard but I imagine that the more I use it, the more familiar I will get with it and it won't be an issue.
Additionally, keys such as Page Up, Page Down, Home, and End have been moved along the top of the keyboard next to the F keys. I don't use these keys much (or the F keys) so their change in position doesn't bother me in the least.
The weight of the keyboard is incredibly light. Even with two AAA batteries it seems the keyboard weighs less than a pound. I haven't actually weighed it so I could be wrong but I feels very light and it take no effort to readjust the board or pick it up and move it.
Functionality:
As I mentioned, the keys are not a bunch of netbook sized keys crammed together. They are slightly smaller than a standard keyboard but anyone who is familiar with typing on a standard laptop keyboard won't be surprised or find it the least bit difficult to type on.
There is a slight arc to the whole thing as can be seen in the pictures. For me, this is a positive thing. It allows my hands to sit at a more natural angle and put significantly less strain on my wrists when typing for a long time.
Overall, I like the feel of the keyboard. The keys have a good response and just enough spring in them. The resistance is minimal so there is not much effort needed to type. I was able to maintain my 93 words per minute with the keyboard after minimal time with it.
Build/Durability:
The build quality seems solid. When placed on a flat surface there is no movement to the keyboard. It feels solidly build and if I dropped it or it fell off my desk I don't think it would incur any damage (aside from cosmetic). I've only had it for a week and I'm very careful with my gadgets so I don't plan on testing its limits but I have no doubt that, if properly taken care, this keyboard will last for a long while.
Cons:
There are only a couple of things that I don't like about the keyboard. The first is the finish on it. Sure, the high gloss, black finish looks nice but it attracts finger prints like you would not believe. This isn't a knock on its performance and it certainly wouldn't stop me from buying a second one but as a neat freak it bugs when I'm having to take a microfiber cloth to it every 15 minutes (you should see me with my touch screen tablet).
Second, there are no media controls. There are volume buttons but no play/pause, next, back, stop, etc... This is slightly annoying as I got used to such controls on my previous Microsoft keyboard. It was easy to simply press next while working on a word document instead of finding iTunes behind all of my other windows and having to selected the next track. Again, this wouldn't stop me from buying a second keyboard but why Microsoft didn't double up on some of the top row keys is a little irritating.
Lastly, and this is more directed a Microsoft than at this particular product, but the fact that there is no universal receiver that can used to couple the Arc keyboard with the Arc mouse (which I also recently purchased). This means that I have to use two receivers to do the same thing that one receiver did with my previous setup.
Over all, I love this keyboard. The first couple of days of having it, I found myself making excuses to use it. Coupled with the Arc mouse (not the Arc Touch) this is the best keyboard/mouse setup I've ever had. I will be ordering a second keyboard to use with my home theater PC setup.
In the past I've owned some keyboards that had a ton of features but they were always incredibly wide (from left to right) so that my mouse couldn't fit on the same platform as the keyboard (which was murder on my right hand trying to reach over to the mouse). Also, I've owned multiple keyboards that made my fingers ache after a day at the computer. This began to happen frequently since I work on my computer at least 8 hours per day.
The Arc Keyboard came through like a champ in both of these areas.
For size, there's no other keyboard I've seen that can compare. There is no number pad so they saved a ton of lateral space that way. The keyboard is also incredibly sleek when it comes to thickness. This makes it great for traveling (plus it looks absolutely gorgeous).
The feel of the keys is very light and has a pleasant "click" to it. There is not a lot of action (the keys don't travel down a lot when pressed. This was perfect for me because it's harder to push keys with a lot of action.
********Trade-offs / Negatives / Things to get used to:
-Anything that is not a normal key (like "home", "end", "F2" "Del") are a different kind of button than the normal keys used to type. They are more like a volume key on a laptop that a key on a keyboard. This is definitely not a positive thing since it is much harder to push them quickly and accurately. However, once I got used to it (after a week or two) the difference didn't hold me back.
-The Arrow keys (up, down, left, right) have been switched with a rocker. It works very well, but again, definitely not the best choice. However, this trade-off was necessary to save on space so I'm good with it.
-The function keys (F1-F12) have been overlapped (if you look at the picture you can see what I mean). Basically, the result is that you must press the "function" key in order to press F7-12. This may be a negligible fact for most but I'm a keyboard shortcut junkie myself and have found that this inhibits some shortcuts that I would like to use. Once again, this trade-off makes the smaller width possible so I think it's a worthy sacrifice.
*********OVERALL this keyboard is fantastic. The typing feels great and the smaller size is right on the money. I give it a 5/5 despite a few negatives because most of them are a result of keeping the size small which was very important to me. Highly recommend this keyboard!
