Product Description
The Older and Wiser Workout with Sue Grant is a gentle, safe workout that is perfect for beginners or those who have not been exercising regularly. All of the exercises are done either standing or sitting on a chair with no lying down on the floor. This fun, well rounded workout includes the three vital components of fitness: easy-to-follow low impact aerobics (23 minutes), gentle stretch training (21 minutes) and relaxing cool down & stretch (10 minutes). You may mix and match these different sections depending on how much time you have and how you are feeling each day. In addition, you will see three different levels for each exercise, so you will be able to "customize" this workout to meet your particular needs. You'll love the upbeat encouragement and helpful cues, and you will be amazed at how quickly you progress! Equipment needed: sturdy chair with no arms, 2-5 lb. Hand weights for strength training, a small pillow (optional).

I love the upbeat attitude and constant encouragement of the workout leader. The other ladies also seem sweet and understanding.

Why this works so well for me:
1) the legs are kept in constant motion and so are the arms but they are separate motions and one doesn't have to do the upper body to do the lower body work out. This works for me as frequently I can't do the upper body work out, or I can just do a little bit but I can still do a workout
2) even just doing the lower body portion I still have lots of variety and fun things to do. I was impressed by this part as most workouts are just stepping for the legs. Somehow she makes me feel like I am doing a bunch of different things.
3) I am encourage to do my best and do push myself but I don't feel like I have to achieve a particular level to be doing a "good" job
4) the music is cheerful but not that heavy of a beat
5) the variety is great as I have said and she calls all the moves fun things
6) very few of the activities require balance and one of the ladies is shown using a chair occasionally so I don't feel like I am doing something less when I do use a chair
The level of activity works great for me and the fact that I feel like I have done a work out without involving the upper body or , on a good day, involve my upper body very little makes this a special work out dvd.

I wouldn't recommend it for seniors who are already reasonably fit.
PROS
- Low impact, that is, no jumping movements that would hurt the knees. If you can walk, you can do this.
- Low intensity, that is, nothing strenuous (though this depends on your fitness level)
- Clear instructions
- Simple setup and filming. No gimmicks or fancy stuff
CONS
- The instructor's voice is unnaturally chirpy and shrill. After a while it gets tedious to listen to.
- One of the three exercisers is supposed to demonstrate an 'easier' version, and one a version holding on to a chair. But all three do the same thing. The 'chair' one doesn't use the chair, she just touches it occasionally. That could be frustrating for people whose legs or balance problems would benefit from leaning on a chair.
If you want something a bit more intense but still easy, or want to progress from this DVD to the next step, try the DVDs by Rosemary Conley and Deborah Mazda.
