Product Description
The seventh and final collaboration between Greta Garbo and her favorite director Clarence Brown, Conquest vividly recreates one of the most celebrated romances in history: the ill-fated love affair between Polish countess Marie Walewska (Garbo) and the Emperor of France, Napoleon Bonaparte (Charles Boyer in the first of his three career Oscar -nominated* performances). Featuring lavish sets, stunning costumes and a dazzling array of historical reenactments, Conquest took five months to film at a then-staggering cost of $3 million. The chemistry between Garbo and Boyer is electric, resulting in a poignant love story that's lost none of its power to conquer the attention of movie lovers across the generations.

Countess Waleska, it has no battle scenes, but the dialogue is good, I didn’t know much about Polish nation so this helps to understand why it was important for Poland to be considered an ally to Napoleonic France.
There is much historical accuracy in the narrative, but, followng the maxim "Never let the truth stand in the way of a good story" much liberty with the truth has been taken.
Garbo is wonderful as a woman who has given up her marriage for her country, falling for a Napoleon who gives up his love for his dynasty.
The narrative is a little too polarised for my taste, and I might have gone for 3* but for the truly spectacular cinematography which puts me back to 4*.
One of Garbo's better films but, despite her 5* performance, the flaws take me back to 4*,
This movie was Garbo's last drama (her last two movies being comedies; "Ninotchka" and "Two-Faced Woman" and shouldn't be missed by Garbo fans or fans of classic dramas in general. I've found that even people who aren't Garbo fans or classic movie fans think it is excellently done. Enjoy watching it and catching Garbomania!
The DVD comes with the Theatrical Trailer and you can chapter skip the movie in 10 minute intervals. There are no subtitles or other features.
Garbo is Marie Walewska, Napoleon's mistress who gives up her comfortable and respectable life to love Napoleon and give him his first son. She remains faithful to him.
