Having ripped abdominals may not make you a celebrity--well, unless you're that guy on Jersey Shore--but if you're looking to "lose weight, get healthy, and change your life," as trainer Jillian Michaels puts it, then 6 Week Six-Pack should find a spot on your menu. It won't be easy; there are two very challenging routines featured here, each of which should be practiced five days a week for three weeks. Nor will it be simply a matter of lying on the floor and doing a few sit-ups. Michaels's mantra is "shed fat while toning your core," and in the course of these two approximately 30-minute routines (Level 1 is hard; Level 2 is harder), you'll spend a good amount of time on your feet doing vigorous aerobic work (marching in place, squats, lunges, leg lifts, and such, all designed to keep the heart rate up), as well as the demanding mat exercises, some of which derive from the plank (or upward pushup) position and thus build arm as well as core strength. The pace is quick, rests are few, and Michaels is a demanding instructor; there's no coddling here, and the workouts are definitely not for the slothful or faint of heart. But she knows what she's doing--her emphasis on the breath will be familiar to anyone who practices yoga, as will some of the poses she uses, and her attention to "control, focus, and form" is helpful. Am two days away from Six weeks, and I got Abs to show for it!To be fair, I already had abs from doing TaeBo (Billy Blanks) workouts. But I needed them to pop out and get more definition, and I achived just that. This is my first ever Jillian Michaels workout and I wasn't sure I would like it, thought it would be too "girly" and easy. Boy was I wrong! And I loved every single drop of sweat, every muscle burn...I wanted a challenge, this dvd gave me that.My endurance level is between intermediate to advanced, so I did all the moves within that range, except. ...Side planks and T kicks. Those I did on my elbow, the entire Six weeks. The down side to this was skin chaffing on my elbows and my tail borne (from floor work). If you are going to "phone it in" using your elbows, buy some elbow pads, though mine is healed up already.I have one pound weighted gloves that I wear in all my workouts, then I added my 2lb dumb bells, they were too lights so I bought 4 lb ones, not too heavy, not too light...I could have gone for the 8 lb but I didn't want to strain too much.Level one isn't what I expected, thought it would be easy, wrong! Probably 95% of this level is on the mat/carpet and you will sweat! I love love love Level 2 (just because there isn't much floor work. Though this dvd says Abs, it's a total body workout and you barely need to supplement with another cardio workout, though I did add an extra 45 mins (both levels, total of 60 mins) in conjunction with a TaeBo Buns workout. After day one, my body was aching, but not anywhere near my tummy. ..this is because I had already been on an Abs workout for a month prior. My aches were on my butt and thighs and legs. Also, if you don't do any arm workout, you will feel the burn in your arms, too much planking on this dvd.Even though I have completed six weeks, I have fallen in love with this workout and I think I'll keep going at it, or give it rotation after one week.I started with my weight at 137lb, by the end of sis weeks I am at 130lbs. Am 5'10" tall so I can weight less than 128lbs, for that reason I will go easy on myself but I could lose more weight if I keep going..I don't want to lose any more. My point is, you can not only gain Abs with this work out, you will lose weight too. Of course you have to eat clean, am normally a clean eater but I losen up on weekends, still enjoy my weekend wine too.Reading reviews here (that said this was too hard, and they were right), plus watching a clip of Level 1 on YouTube convinced me to give this a try. So glad I did it, I have officially jumped on the Jillian Michaels band wagon, purchased 3 more of her dvds.One one thing I can't stand in this dvd ; PLANK MOGULS! DECK! ON THE FLOOR! NOW! (She reduces you/me, to a child with this yelling. I hate being yelled at Jillian! )If you are looking for a challenge or just something new, Abs...give this dvd a try. You don't have to be perfect at these moves, customize to your fitness level. There are no rests in between, but I get why she did this, to keep your heart rate going. The 30 mins per level go by so fast! I do both. Happy workoutholic here!
