This brush cutting attachment, which I bought for my Craftsman 4 cycle weedwhacker, went together without a problem and quite quickly. It was just a matter of installing the "J" handle and a small loop assembly for the harness. The attachment went on the shaft very easily. It fit perfectly, showing the more universal situation regarding most split-shaft attachments. I know may speak about proprietary parts, but I'm not sure this applies to split-shaft equipment. I've never had a problem matching these kinds of parts.
The working end of the machine, which is this blade assembly, worked like a charm. I was skeptical, being that I've used line trimmers for ages and know exactly how to hold them, tilt them and work them through even the thickest brush, but have never used a blade of any kind. When I set this one up, I was surprised that I didn't feel anything sharp at all, no matter where I touched the blade. I wondered if something was wrong. So, I cautiously cranked up the motor and warmed it up, then I took it down to a swampy area below the house. We have 87 acres, but I maintain only a few acres outside of the immediate lawns. I will use the weedwhacker up and down steeper banks, such as the ravine next to the house, and anywhere I won't take the John Deere lawn tractor or the DR bush cutter. I've done a good job with the line trimmer head, but I always had to go around the thicker saplings and anything woody. I use a very thick line, so it will work into thicker stems, but I need to let the line strike it for a minute or two before it may or may not cut through.
So, I decided to try this bush cutting attachment, to see if it could take care of what the line trimmer head could not. My skepticism left once I began getting the feel of handling this unit, which happened very quickly for me. I was instanly knocking down trunks that were at least an inch thick, letting it saw for so many seconds, and got them right at the ground. I then used the blade to knock off the branches and cut the trunks to shorter lengths. I would say the blade, dull as it felt to the touch, went right through those narrow, woody trunks without much effort at all.
The brush that I needed to cut was growing out of various pits caused by underground water flow, and was deep enough so that I couldn't get the DR walk-behind brush cutter at any of it. I got out the weeds with the line trimmer, but the heavier stuff would have required loppers, which was my game plan before I ordered this blade attachment. I do have a lot of wild shrubs growing out from the creek that runs through our valley, most in standing mud or water and tons that grow just over the rather steep bank. I won't take the DR into too much mud or water, nor will I let it get too close to the fragile edge of the embankment, so this blade will certainly be a great help to me.
I would say that before you might feel critical of this tool, be sure you use it properly, with good speed on the blade, and attack the brush at any angle that works best for you. Don't expect the smooth or even the scalped ground you can get with a line trimmer head, but plan for knocking down the thicker stuff and seeing it lie about as you cut it. I never experienced pieces flying back at me at all, but I would wear protection for eyes anyway, and I would wear long pants and boots for added protection. Those would be normal precautions.
Personally, I am satisfied with this tool and would recommend it to anyone. Because I'm sure like split-shaft heads would operate in quite the same way, I believe any negative reviews must come from the user's lack of proper operation during the attack. I felt no vibration at all using this one, but if blades aren't attached properly while replacing them, the speed of spin itself could cause plenty of it. This unit, out of the box, worked just as I hoped, and now I feel far more confident in both the purchasing and operating of such tools. As far as my recommendation is concerned. please note that this was my first day using it, so I cannot vouch for its longevity. It feels solid and well constructed from a newbie's point of view, so take that into consideration as you ponder over the investment in this TrimmerPlus brush cutting attachment.
