Take Your Stereo Wireless
Onkyo's UWF-1 Wireless LAN adaptor removes unwanted cables. This small, optional unit is worth way more than its tiny price. Connect the UWF-1 to the USB port on any compatible 2011 Onkyo network receiver, and bring your music through your wireless router into your Onkyo system. Now internet radio and audio files stored on your PC can be played back with the superior fidelity of your main Onkyo system — with no cable clutter. A sensible and inexpensive solution.
Made for iPod/iPhone
Simply connect your iPod/iPhone via Front-Panel USB Port of the TX-NR8050 and play audio files stored on your iPod/iPhone or a USB flash drive. As the audio signals are transported in digital form, rather than analog, there is much less chance for signal degradation. The TX-8050 also incorporates Onkyo's exclusive Advanced Music Optimizer to compensate for lost bit information and improve the quality of compressed audio signals. End result: your music sounds cleaner and more faithful to the original.
Send Stereo to the Next Room: Zone 2
Zone 2 pre-outs on the TX-8050 allow you to send a stereo audio signal to a second room equipped with an amplifier and a pair of speakers. You can either enjoy the same source in both rooms, or play a different source in Zone 2.Spin Those Records
Phono Input- We know there are those who have retained a love for vinyl. And we respect this most noble of devotions. Therefore, we still make the Phono Input that allows you to use your record player to spin those albums and hear them with pristine Onkyo sound quality.Because, after all, it's all about Sound.

Regarding the power of the receiver relative to my speakers, for "normal" listening I am setting the volume of the receiver at about 10 (out of 80 I believe). This weekend, I got permission from my wife to test the volume at what, for me, is a much higher level to see whether or not I was getting any distortion or clipping. Given that, I tuned to my "Pink Floyd" channel on Pandora and cranked it up as loud as I thought I could get away with. This took me up to about 40 on the volume and it sounded very, very good to my untrained ear. I have the stereo in a very large living room with vaulted ceilings and, as I mentioned, reasonable listening levels for that room, including the adjacent kitchen, are achieved at 10-12 on the volume (granted, my speakers are pretty sensitive at 95 db).
My only complaint about the networking, which I think was mentioned by another reviewer, is that it has to reconnect every time I turn the receiver on and it takes a bit of time to do that (not sure, maybe 20 seconds or so). Once it is connected, it also has to connect to the specific service you are using (e.g. Pandora, or DLNA). Once it is connected, things work great (although I have seen one instance where Pandora disconnected and I had to reconnect it).
I found it easy to set up the networking, I used the "push button" approach on my router which worked just fine (connecting with WPA security on an 802.11N 2.4 ghz network). Entering the email and password for Pandora was a bit tedious, but worked fine (once I figured out how to find the @ sign for the email, which is answered in another review posted here.
One thing that surprised me was that my turntable (as it turns out) does not connect to the Phono inputs on the receiver (I did not realize this until I tried it and it sounded terrible, which caused me to have to go back and look at the manual for the turntable (where it clearly said "do not plug this into the Phono inputs on your receiver as it will sound terrible"). There was not a good alternative input that was not a bit misleading (I looked for auxiliary, was not there, ended up using DVD or something).
One other surprise for me was that the receiver did not recognize my 2nd generation iPOD Nano ("No storage" error). It did recognize my son's more recent iPOD, but not mine. I actually think this is a problem with my iPOD as my laptop has a similar issue with the device (although it does work with my desktop), so I am not faulting the receiver for this.
I have tried the FM and AM tuner and that seems fine, I am getting all the stations I expected to get.
I have also used my CD player with this unit and that was fine as well.
While I was researching the unit, I called Onkyo a few times to ask questions and I found them to be responsive and knowledgeable.
This receiver has several audio modes, one of which is aimed at optimizing digitized music - I like that setting the best, it seems to work very well.
So far, I am very happy with the receiver.
I pride myself in doing a lot of research when buying electronics (and many other things) - I do research for a living, I'm an analyst.
So - I saw the overwhelming number of positive reviews on this Onkyo TX-8050 here at Amazon - no reason not to believe my fellow reviewers, I'm absolutely sure that they are happy enjoying their units - I just want to talk about mine and what seems to be a common problem with these units. I did not only read the reviews in Amazon - I went further, deeper and read everything the Internet brought back to me via the search engines - everything seemed to indicate that this was an awesome unit - again, I'm pretty sure the ones that work are great - unfortunately, that is not my case, I probably did a few mistakes starting with buying a "used-very good" unit from the Amazon "warehouse deals" (which I bought from in the past with no problems) - is one of those things that nagged me at the back of my mind: "wow, this deal seems too good to be true!" - I should've pay attention.
I always wanted a receiver that could play Pandora and Internet radio stations - I had a work-around through my Airport Express set up that I had hooked up to my "mini" system (Pro-ject boxes), enjoying the sound through my Martin Logans "Purity" speakers (which by the way, are awesome!) - through my set-up I had to: have my Mac on, using the "Airfoil" program, and streaming it to my living-room so I could enjoy my music through my "big" speakers - the set-up worked great, but I had to have a few things on working at the same time and I decided to minimize the equation by getting a receiver like the Onkyo TX-8050 - just one piece of equipment, "talking" to my wi-fi (which is always, securely, on.)
Mind you - this was meant to be my Christmas present to myself! :-) I worked very hard all year long and I believed I deserved a little something! :-)
I was very excited, I even downloaded the user's manual before the unit got to my place - I read everything the night before, I felt like a little kid on Christmas day!
The unit arrived - I took time off work and rushed home to unpack and hook the unit to my set up - I un-hooked my Pro-ject boxes and gently set them aside (after many years of faithful service!) and I hooked everything up according to the instructions (followed to the "t") - everything looked awesome, everything was just right, then...I pressed the "on" button and then disaster struck...I heard a click and a brief message flashed on the display: "Check spk wire" I tried it again with the same results - I unhooked everything then referred to the manual, followed everything and all I was getting was the same "Check spk wire" flash-message and the unit would turn off automatically. I was "beyond believe" that my unit would not work - did I do anything wrong? I retraced everything, and no, I did not, I followed the instructions to the letter, yet the unit would not work. I called Onkyo's support line...I got an automatic reply telling me something along the lines of: "...we are experiencing a "high" call volume, your approximate wait time will be 21 minutes..." followed by some annoying "wait" music...so, I waited, and waited...28 and a half minutes later I get...guess what? voice mail!..."Please, leave your name and number and nature of you problem and someone will get back in touch with you...." talk about adding insult to injury here!!! Onkyo I hope you're reading this (but then again you don't care, which is obvious!) - you dropped the ball fathoms into the depths of incompetence!
So, what to do with this unit? I didn't give up - I still had hope...maybe there's a "reset" button and once I press it, everything will be all-right - nope, no reset button...maybe if I unplug it and wait an hour and plug it back in, it'll fire up and I'll be enjoying all my Pandora stations in no time! - nope - didn't happen, and it didn't happen after leaving it all night unplugged and plugging it back up first thing in the morning - this thing was absolutely and irrevocably Dead on Arrival (DOA!) While I was doing all this "waiting for a miracle" I continued to do my research... I went into a few search engines and wrote: "Onkyo TX-8050 Check spk wire" - lo and behold there was a lot of information available - many angry customers (understandably enough!) ...and get this, not only with the TX-8050 units but other Onkyo models too!...ay caramba!
It even gets worse...since Onkyo's telephone support was abysmal...I still held hope that some competent, caring technician would answer an email I sent them through their portal online, do you think it worked? I have contacted many "support" departments for a diverse number situations over the past 10-12 years - it's standard practice for any business that I dealt with (and currently dealing with) to get an "automated" response..."someone will be in touch with you within 24-48 hours" or at least a small acknowledgment (...yeah, we hear you...) didi I get that from Onkyo? if you guessed NO, you're right! It took them 3 days to get back to me - by which time I already had the unit packed and ready to be sent back to Amazon - their email?...."oh, yeah someone will get back in touch with you..." is this the best that Onkyo can do for customer service?
CONCLUSION:
1 - Amazon return procedures - I rate at a definite 5 stars - nice and easy and my refund is being processed - I'm happy about that! :-)
2 - Amazon "quality control" on used items - ZERO stars - shame on you for selling defective equipment!
3 - Onkyo (overall) - based on my experience - Negative -5 stars - your telephone wait time: RIDICULOUS! your email response: PATHETIC! Onkyo's "caring" of their customers: NON-EXISTING!
4 - Will I ever buy Onkyo again? NEVER!
5- Will I ever use Amazon "warehouse deals"? Maybe... for smaller things.
6 - What did I finally get? a Denon AVR-1613 - surprise...it worked straight out of the box - I highly recommend this unit! Their customer service? I called their 800 number and I actually talked to a human being in less than 5 minutes - go figure!
