Now, I didn't realize it was one piece (well, each section is perforated) so I ordered two of the same size thinking I could remove each strip and use it for my daughters much smaller violin. Surprise to me when the package came in but I am not a quitter! I simply cut the strips and found the corresponding note. Let me say, it easily comes off without any residue if you mess up!

I would forewarn any beginners out there, IF YOU DO NOT HAVE A TUNER DO NOT REMOVE IT BY YOURSELF.
The main reason is that the strings have to be loosened to the point that you can put the fret board on your fingerboard easily without contacting your strings, for a beginner this may end up being too loose and you could have your bridge fall out of place, making it difficult to restore if you are not familiar with placement. Also be careful you dont loosen your pegs too much if you are worried about them slipping out.
But a tuner is a must unless you have a piano or some other way to tune by ear, if you are a beginner, tuning by ear may be difficult.
It confuses my wife because she is used to only the three, but I found it very helpful especially for those notes 1/2 between the main ones. (white stripes.)
I bought a second one for my electric violin. It looks a lot neater than the tape and even teaches me the finger positions at the higher octave positions than the three tape version. Half of what you see can be removed so you don't have the lower stripes, but I decided to keep mine.
