Fast forward a couple of years, and I lost tray that allowed me to use the Nikon batteries in the grip. At that point, I went online and looked into getting a new tray and came to the conclusion that maybe I should just order a new grip. I am not going to lie, while the Meike was functional, I always wanted the Nikon grip. At $300 I decided to pull the trigger and am glad I did. The Nikon grip just screams quality. The multi-directional feels just like the one on the camera, and the rubber grip feels great. With the Meike, I always knew that the vertical grip was an accessory. With the Nikon version, I actually feel like it is part of the camera. Once I attack the grip, and screw it down, it becomes part of the camera, as if it was manufactured with the vertical grip attached. I really like that! The buttons all feel great, and I feel confident carrying the camera just holding the vertical grip, I would never do that with the Meike!
In the end, I really wanted the Nikon version, and now that it is a bit more reasonably priced, I was willing to pay a few hundred for a quality accessory. I like knowing that the equipment was designed to work together, and is made of the highest-quality materials. I also like the weather sealing this grip offers. I do shoot a lot outdoors, and while I don’t shoot in anything extreme, I do sometimes shoot in fog or a slight drizzle. I guess fundamentally I am paying for peace of mind. I like knowing that all my stuff will work, exactly when and how I want it to. I never had a problem with the Meike but always worried that I would have a problem. It just felt cheap, and I was always waiting for it to conk out on me… I hope that makes sense. The Nikon grip just inspires confidence. You know it is up for the job, and won’t let you down! Is it worth the extra money? That really depends on you. I’m a bit of a worrier, and I am willing to pay for peace of mind and a build quality that leaves me smiling. For many, however, I am aware that this would make no sense. The Meike never gave me a problem, and got the job done, so what why would I worry. I guess I really don’t have an answer for that expect that the cheap plastic constantly lead me to think it was going to break, and I would never use it any even fog much less a light rain. With the Nikon, however, I don’t even need to think about it. If the camera can do it, the vertical grip is up for coming along!
I also like the fact that it can take a variety of batteries, from Nikon's rechargeable batteries, to conventional AA's. I find that a set of lithium AA's gets me well over 2500 shots, and they're easy to replace anywhere. Attaching one also boosts the frame rate of your camera, though that's really secondary to me.
Construction quality is what you'd expect from Nikon's pro-grade gear. It's rugged, well-sealed against dirt and moisture and will probably last longer than the camera it's attached to. It has the expected tripod adapter on the bottom, and generally, the only time you'll want to remove it from the camera would be to access the battery in the camera itself.
Still, most people complain about two things on these devices. One, the product is essentially the same as the MB-D10 you might have used on your Nikon D300, but the older unit doesn't fit on the newer camera bodies. I was in this situation myself, and it was certainly frustrating to need to buy a new grip when my old one seemed almost identical.
Complaint number two is generally the price. At the list price of over $600 (US), this seems like an extravagant accessory, and I'm not sure I would have paid that much for mine. There are third-party versions of this same grip that are much less expensive. Still, Amazon offers the MB-D12 at about a 40% discount, putting it right about the same price as I paid for my MB-D10.
Overall, this is a great accessory for your D800/D800E, and in spite of the cost, I wouldn't live without it.
It makes your camera feel oh so right. Beyond the comfort factor your battery life also doubles either through the addition of another EN-EL 15 or 8 AA batteries. There is also an option to use the Nikon D4's battery, the EN-EL 18, but you must first purchase the BL-5 battery cover (of course it's sold separately right?!). By the way, a soft Nikon case is included to store one of the battery trays when not in use. The grip has good weight and feels as though it genuinely belongs on your camera. The shutter button is responsive and you will feel right at home with the rest of the controls as well. In my opinion this is an essential accessory for the professional photographer and it would have been ideal if Nikon just built it onto the body of the D800 from the start. However, I suppose then the differences between the flagship of the Nikon line, the D4, and the D800 would be diminished which would be a poor business move. It would also be nice if Nikon engineered the battery grip to house two EN-EL 15 batteries as opposed to one so that you wouldn't have to remove the battery grip every time you needed to recharge the battery located inside the camera. Maybe there is another reason this is not a feature although it can be done and I appreciated the convenience it afforded on the Canon 7D.
You could wait for a generic version, you could wait for Nikon to lower the price, but we all know life is short and those two options are just not as much fun.
This item deserves 5 stars.

Totalmente recomendable
There has been a lot of criticism of this grip, and it is worth paying attention to it before going down this route. First, the grip is expensive compared to earlier models. Second, one battery remains in the camera while the other goes in the grip, which seems unintuitive. Third, some people think it is flimsy or poorly made, though that isn't my experience. Fourth, in order to get the higher frame rate you have to buy the D4-type battery, the EN-EL18 , a Nikon BL-5 Battery Chamber Cover for D800 , and the ruinously priced Nikon MH-26 UK Battery Charger for EN-EL18 , unless you already own a D4.
The total package price, if you want to go all the way on this one, is around £650, which may seem a lot for the ability to lift your camera to 6fps in DX mode, which is itself reducing your resolution to under 20MP.
My own experience is that this battery pack is just as good as the earlier ones. It also has more functions, as it repeats the toggle switch now required by the presence of video. I don't really see how it is 'flimsy', but that's a personal view.
In terms of the way the other battery remains in the camera, this seems to me an advantage. With the D100 battery grip, for example, both batteries were kept in the grip. This meant that if you removed the grip to make the camera lighter or less conspicuous, you had to relocate the battery holder, refit it, and transfer the battery. With the new arrangement, you just unscrew the battery grip and use it. You can route power usage through the grip first, which means that you are using up that power first, leaving your in-camera battery fully charged.
In terms of the overall cost, my view is that Nikon has deliberately positioned this as a major upgrade to the camera's capabilities. It beats out the much more expensive earlier D3X in resolution, ISO and shutter rate, leaving the D3X only superior in battery life and in having a vertical shutter release and duplicate controls. By fitting the battery grip and EN-EL18 battery, you have a camera which is substantially more capable than the D800 alone, and than the D3X ever was.
Like all choices, you have to weigh up cost, capability and weight. It balanced out for me.
As far as getting a third-party battery grip, I baulked at this after reading some of the horror stories about D800s no longer working at all. Some risks are not worth taking.
