The Manual is not great on formats, what works best with what movie software. Also, I inserted the memory chip into my iMac, and lost all the contents, and don't know what wiped me out. I recommend checking your results by hooking the videocam up to your monitor by way of USB, or with an HD cable connection ()both of which the camera supports), rather than putting the chip at risk in another device. You'll need to find a way to download your content from the camera to your computer for editing / processing. Don't try this with the memory chip inserted into your computer, that's what got me in trouble. The Manual will not tell you any of this.
The camera also supports use of an external mic, so if you have tricky audio situations or needs, that gives you flexibility. There is another version of this cameral which gives you the option of recording to internal memory or to memory card, not a must, but it might be a nice-to-have depending on your needs. With the option, you can use one mode for still shots, and another for video, for example. The operating menus on the device can be a little confusing, and it takes a bit of practice to understand which menu you need, and then which sub-menu, but a couple of days of working with the cameral will make that aspect intuitive. I have not had experience working with the 3D mode. Nor with the wi-fi interface capabilities. Have seen some reviews that suggest the latter may not be totally satisfying, so if wi-fi is a big deal for you, check this out carefully.
All in all, an excellent product in my experience. I would say it sits in the middle of the spectrum in terms of basic functionality on the one hand, and professional level video on the other. Does a surprising number of things well at this price point. Solidly made, has a good feel in the hand, and is a little larger than many of the other amateur-oriented cams, which is a good thing for hand-held operation.
Couple of complaints are
1. When you set to photo shoot mode it takes a long time to take a picture and get ready for the next one. Not as fast as camera where you can make multiple instant clicks. Thats a bummer for me . I thought i could replace my camera completely with this.
2. Not sure why there is no remote. If you connect this to TV with HDMI without a remote how can you fast forward?. Ofcourse people dont buy panasonic TV often for a seamless sync. For this price, why dont you throw in a remote?. When sony can throw in a projector for this price a remote should have been included.
3. The Panasonic image app is little creapy. If you are shooting remote and if the WIfi breaks what will you do. Moreover when you play the video with the Image app the quality is lost , ofcourse it has go to do with Router speed. But despite my router is fast enough dont get a quality.
But on the upside it a reliable camcorder for taking quality videos.
Exactly 4 months after purchase (convenient as the warranty is 90 days), I began experiencing some mechanical AND software malfunctions. Sometimes when I turned the camera on, I would hear this loud buzzing noise, that was either coming from the automatic lens cover, or the stabilization system. The buzzing would persist until I reset the camera. The lens cover would also sometimes get stuck open after I turned the camera off. But these were minor annoyances that I could live with, even though I paid big money (for me) for this camera.
The true show stopper was a severe glitch in the video (over half the display) that would randomly occur during recording. This "glitch" would freeze the display and the recorded video, and would only go away after restarting the camera. This was a show stopper for me, because I didn't want to be recording something off a tripod, like a children's play for example, and the glitch happen unaware to me, only to realize after that I missed out on the entire event because of the camera. I added a picture of the glitch in the customer pictures.
Dealing with Panasonic Customer service (specifically the McAllen, TX service center) has been one of the worst customer service experiences of my life. I've been without the camera for THREE MONTHS now (missed so many "firsts" from my baby girl). At one point they sent the camera back to me AS IS because the tech could not reproduce the glitch (I was able to reproduce it after 5 minutes into the first recording). Their communication is terrible. My shipment will show as "received" for weeks with no update. Only after I email them asking for an update will they send one. There are other things as well that have made this a bad experience, but in order to keep the review short, I will not go into detail. Ask me a question for more detail if you want.
No amount of product quality can offset such a poor customer service experience IMO, which is why I have no choice but to rate this as 1 star (0 if i could give it). I will NEVER purchase another Panasonic product again.
