As an audio professional, I was extremely skeptical that the auto-setup with Audyysey would actually yield satisfactory results. Much to my surprise, it was actually able to correctly determine the distance from my speakers to my listening position(s)*, and the EQ did make my system sound much better in my room. Probably the most notable difference was a smoother crossover between my subwoofer and main speakers.
*You can actually map up to six listening positions in your room, and it will average the locations to give well balanced performance regardless of where you're sitting.
The dynamic EQ aspect of Audyysey is also pretty impressive. Audyysey will dynamically adjust the EQ so the balance of the frequencies stay the same regardless of your listening volume. No more turning down your volume and hearing the source material get too bass heavy...
The dynamic volume aspect is interesting, but seems to hype the center channel a bit too much. The idea behind dynamic volume is that it intelligently adjusts the output to compensate for a wildly fluctuating input. (The listening level is supposed to stay the same so you don't need to be constantly adjusting your volume when a loud local commercial comes on) After trying this for a while, I ended up just turning it off.
The CEC aspect isn't very well documented or intuitive. CEC allows you to remotely control compatible devices through HDMI. I enabled CEC on the receiver, and my Blu-Ray player, but I couldn't control any external devices with my receiver's remote control until I input the product codes for those devices. This is fine for my Blu-Ray player and TV, but for devices like my Amazon Fire TV that uses bluetooth to control the device, I still needed the Fire's remote. It wasn't until I decided to put in the DVD manual for my receiver, (I really miss printed manuals being shipped with products...) that I read that there were special CEC remote codes. After trying the CEC remote codes, one of them works for my devices! Now I can control my Fire TV through HDMI, so I only need the receiver's remote control. Since the receiver has a searchable database of remote codes to help setup your devices on the supplied remote, it would have been nice if the CEC codes were mentioned there.
The Net section of the receiver is fairly rudimentary with no frills, but since I use my Fire TV for any internet streaming services, that doesn't bother me very much. I did do some testing though, and the services do work, but I did run into some issues, like the lack of special characters supported by the receiver's onscreen keyboard, I was unable to log into my Pandora account without first changing my password.
Updating the receiver's firmware of the internet takes a surprisingly long time.
The receiver makes it very easy to change listening modes, so if you like to listen to stereo sources with pseudo-surround decoding, it's easy to do. DTS Neo is particularly impressive in this regard. It is able to somehow derive discrete surround information from a stereo source. (Unlike old-school Dolby Pro-Logic with mono surrounds, with Neo, you'll hear panning surround information) If you want to hear something impressive, add These Hopeful Machines by BT to your Prime music account, then listen to song number 3, Every Other Way, through the Neo:x Cinema setting. (x will vary depending on the number of speakers you have. DTS Neo is scalable.) BT's distinctive stuttering musical style lends particularly well to this algorithm.
All around, I'm very impressed with this receiver. I'm very familiar with the way my system sounds in my room, and I was merely replacing my older receiver (No HDMI) with this one. This receiver is less powerful than my old one, so I was expecting poorer low end and dynamic response with this new receiver, but I felt the price warranted the tradeoff. Much to my surprise, with this receiver, after Audyysey calibration, my system sounds better than it ever has! I'm very pleased with this purchase.
I would like to start this review out by saying that while I have had this AVR setup for over a week now, I have had no issues with reliability. If I begin having breakdowns I will lower my rating. So far this receiver works and works well! I bought this AVR because I wanted the HDMI input connections for my Cable, Bluray, and Apple TV and at least one to grow on. This AVR has them and they work. I also wanted this receiver to be able to produce audio on two zones, as I have a patio wired with outside speakers. I love the two zone feature of this AVR, yeah it only plays digital feeds if that same feed is also being played simultaneously through Zone 1. This is ok for me since most of what I play on Zone 2 is through the Net Connection and that works. Also, from what I understand you can simultaneously run both a digital and analog connection to each input source, but I have yet to confirm that.
My 626 is connected to my network by hard wire (not wireless) and I use Pandora and TuneIn the most, although I am thinking about getting a spotify account to try. I love the connectivity as I use Pandora almost all the time. I also love the connectivity for the Onkyo remote app. The Remote 3 app, this is a fantastic app by Onkyo, when it works. Mine has worked about 90% of the time. I have heard others find it much more unreliable, and that would be frustrating! Mine, however, works and on the rare occasion that it crashes, I can fix it by powering down my iPhone and unplugging the AVR.
The sound quality works for me and my high sensitivity speakers. I was concerned with having only 95 w/ ch in a big 20'x20'x18' room, but with high sensitivity speakers (BIC Acoustech 5.0 system) the clarity comes across crystal clear, and with more than enough power.
All in all I have found the Onkyo 626 to work and work well for me and it does everything I bought it to do.
