Choi Min-shik first made a name for himself in theater before breaking into the film world with a role in Park Chong-won's acclaimed film 'Our Twisted Hero' (1997). In the mid-nineties he continued to act in theater productions as well as in several TV dramas, including Moon Over Seoul with Han Seok-gyu. 1997 marked his return to motion pictures, with a role as a tough-talking police investigator in Song Neung-han's No. 3. His biggest role came in 1999, when he was cast in Korea's most successful film ever, Swiri. His portrayal of a North Korean agent garnered him much praise and a Best Actor Award from the 1999 domestic Grand Bell Awards. After starring in a theater production of Hamlet in spring of 1999, Choi took on the role of a husband who discovers his wife's infidelity in Happy End, and in early 2001 starred as a third-rate gangster opposite Hong Kong actress Cecilia Cheung in the acclaimed Failan. In 2003 he starred in the now classic Oldboy.

The Best Gangster Film Since The Departed

Since The Departed, what has Hollywood given us in the realm of quality gangster films? American Gangster? That's a good flick. Public Enemies? Okay. Lawless? Eh, alright. Gangster Squad? Oh, wait, what? It just appears to keep getting worse in Hollywood. Not so much in South Korea. Between A Bittersweet Life, A Dirty Carnival, and now New World, these guys are on fire.

The film opens with the brutal dispensing of a rat within Goldmoon, the biggest crime syndicate in Korea. It is a cold, not-so-subtle warning of what happens to a rat and undercover police officer Ja-sung knows it: either via a pair of concrete boots or by concrete ingestion, you'll sleep with the fishes. After 8 years, he's successfully infiltrated Goldmoon and become the right hand man and "bro" of Goldmoon's 2nd in command, the half Chinese Jung Chung. The stakes are as high as he sees they can get, and for that reason, he wants out.

Meanwhile, after successfully being acquitted of all charges due to lack of evidence, Goldmoon Chairman Seok Dong-chul is killed in a mysterious car accident, throwing the massive syndicate into a succession crisis, with Ja-sung caught right in the middle of those loyal to his "bro" Jung Chung, those of the full Korean Lee Joong-gu, and those of his manipulative and lying boss, Police Section Chief Kang Hyung-chul, who seeks to influence the succession in the Police's favor. As you can guess from the title of my review, it may be needless to say I found the ensuing events in this Korean "Game Of Thrones" immensely gripping. I won't go in any further to avoid spoilers.

Written and Directed by I Saw The Devil's Park Hoon-jung, New World has convinced me that it's the best entry in the Gangster genre since The Departed. With the exception of the closing scene (which comes across as almost an afterthought), the film is an out and out masterpiece. It is very easy to see why Hollywood shelved out $600,000 for the remake rights. Impeccably acted, scripted, shot, and directed, the film is (edit: was) a major contender for the 'Best Foreign-Language Film' Oscar at the upcoming Academy Awards.

What's bad? Aside from the closing scene feeling like an afterthought, I really can't think of anything. Is it too violent for kids? Yes. Is there a lot of bad language? Yes. Is there a whole lot of sex? Not really. Is it really the best Gangster film since The Departed? Yes. And that's pretty much all the reason a real movie lover should need to check out this wonderful gem.

Michael Corleone - Korean Asian Style!

This is a movie I took a chance on, like spin the wheel on Korean movie night. I suspected the film would be somewhat slow paced. It was. After enduring the initial grind, however, the movie swiftly upped up its game and got seriously juicy by the end. The Koreans have made some darn good films that I’ve seen largely because of the pandemic—The Outlaws, Train to Busan, The Divine Fury, The Man From Nowhere, The Gangster, The Cop, The Devil.

We can add New World to the list. I won’t give away the movie but, on a similar note, I was reminded of the main character as a young Michael Corleone looking dapper and being ushered officially into the gangster world when the last movie credits were rolling. Compared to some Korean gangster movies, the violence seemed apropos to the context and ebb and flow of the movie. There was nothing too gratuitous—just gangster violence that comes with that territory of that cruel underworld!

In short: even The Godfather, the king of all gangster movies, would give this film some props for being worthy enough of holding its own with Mario Puzo’s book adapted for the big screen by the talented Coppola.

I saw this film years go, seen it several times since. great actors. most of them have done lots of great roles since. the handler cop was the lead in the original "oldboy" redone by Josh Brolin. the "godfather" in new world has a new feature out called "chief of staff" on a rival network, kind of a spin off of house of cards. good cinema.

Im Gegensatz zu Hollywood, die noch in den neunzigern hängen geblieben sind, entwickelt das asiatische und auch europäische Kino sich ständig weiter. Du denkst, das kann nicht mehr getoppt werden, doch dann wird man eines besseren belehrt. New World ist ein Film der nicht durch seine, am Computer gemachten Effekte brilliert, sondern durch seine Handlung. Es gibt nur, eine wirklich harte Szene in dem Film und das reicht auch. Das Ende, ohne es zu verraten ist komplex,einzigartig und das große Finale des Films. Eine Verstrickung aus Gut und Böse, wo man nicht wirklich weiß, wer Gut oder Böse ist. Der Zuschauer kann sich sein eigenes Bild machen. Ich geh mal soweit und sage, dass in diesem Fall deutlich mehr Demokratie in diesen Filmen erscheint, als in diesen Hinterwäldlerfilmen aus den USA. Wo man gezwungen wird zu glauben wer ist Böse oder wer ist Gut. Was natürlich die Hollywoodpropaganda immer so darstellt: USA Gut und alle anderen schlecht. Also mal ganz ehrlich, wer sein Gehirn auch beim filmegucken gerne mal anstrengt und nicht nur mit Computereffekten unterhalten werden will, sollte sich diesen Film angucken. Kleiner Tipp. Gibt es auch beim Instant Prime kosenlos. Besser geht es doch nicht.
