Product Description

Product Description

With the Melt 'N Mold Factory from Crayola, you can use Crayola crayons to create custom swirled crayons and molded toys. This kit includes everything you need to melt, mold, and create: 24 full-size Crayola crayons in four different colors, two molds, and a mold holder. Designed for kids six and up, the Melt 'N Mold Factory gives you a fun way to transform crayon bits into new colors and toys.

The Melt 'N Mold Factory lets you create your own multicolored crayons and toys.
Mix, Melt, and Mold to Create Multicolored Crayons

The Melt 'N Mold Factory makes it easy to create original color combinations and molded objects. Start with an array of crayon bits--high-contrast colors such as blue and yellow or green and orange create the best results. Then add your custom combination to the melting tray, turn the dial toward the on/off switch, and watch the colors melt and blend. When the melting process is done, simply pour the melted wax into the mold of your choice to create a brand new, one-of-a-kind crayon.

Includes Two Reusable Molds and Mold Frame

The factory comes with two reusable molds. One mold makes new crayons in the traditional shape, while the other creates two ring-shaped crayons at a time. Each mold snaps easily and securely into the holder and then attaches to the factory. The Melt 'N Mold Factory is powered by any AC outlet, so there are no batteries to replace.

Expansion Packs Expand the Fun

To expand your options and create additional fun shapes, Melt 'N Mold Factory works with any of the Crayola expansion packs (sold separately). With these packs you can make Crayon Cruisers, Crayon Critters, and more.

    Good, but not without faults

    Good, but not without faults
I had been eyeing this little treasure for quite some time as I wanted to find a way to recycle all the broken crayon pieces that my kids create. I seriously bought it for the practical function, rather than the fun aspect of mixing colors and making crazy shaped crayons. All I wanted was the crayon mold. To make crayons. My kids like the rings. And probably would love it if I got the car mold too. Perhaps I will at some point. For the most part, it works as described. The time dial doesn't exactly line up correctly, but I can deal with that. Just tilt the tray when the light goes off - it's not rocket science. While it is necessary to make sure that the melting tray has full contact with the heating plate, it's not nearly as difficult as some reviewers have made it seem. When set up correctly, I haven't had trouble with incomplete melting. I have observed that the heating plate does in fact turn off when the light goes off, so it's important to pour the melted crayons into the mold as soon as this happens, otherwise, they will begin to cool in the tray and not pour as well (in which case, you just turn the dial to turn the heating plate back on). So, yes, you need to be in the immediate area checking it regularly assuming you aren't standing over it watching the whole time. There is no ding or buzzer to alert you when it's time, just the light going off, so you have to pay attention. It is also important that you don't pour too quickly, otherwise you will have bubbles in your final crayons. If you pour too slowly, the wax may begin to cool before you've poured enough into the mold. It may take a few tries to get the speed just right. I have also observed that placing the mold in the refrigerator for the 10 minute waiting period after it is removed from the machine works better than leaving it at room temperature. The wax is still too soft and warm to removed the mold if you let it sit on the counter. As far as the molds go, I am disappointed by the crayon mold. This mold was the whole reason I got the machine. The mold makes three crayons that are about an inch shorter than the traditional crayon. Also, due to the design of the mold, you end up with wax pieces that stick the crayons together on the sides. The crayons need to be snapped apart, which can result in breaking them in the process. The crayons are then left with rough, jagged sides, rather than smooth round sides. The ring mold is a bit better. There only seems to be a bit of extra wax that seeps out on the edges, which can be broken off easily. There is excess wax at the top of the rings where the wax pours into the mold, but again, it breaks off easily and cleanly in most cases. The molds will stain, but it does not seem to discolor the crayons you are creating.Cleaning is actually easier than I thought. The melting tray wipes pretty clean immediately after use, but you do need to keep it on the melting plate (even though the heat is off) to keep it warm enough to clean thoroughly. The corners on the melting tray and in the molds are the most difficult to get clean. You will find wax shards everywhere. Also, to my disappointment, a lot of wax is wasted in this process, as the amount that stays on the tray is astounding, even when using less than the recommended number of crayons starting out. Once the molds are full, you stop pouring, so whatever is left in the tray is wasted. Doing continuous runs of crayons (without cleaning/wiping the tray in between) helps to minimize this, but that also depends on how you want your final crayon colors to be.Despite the faults with the product, I'm still glad I purchased it. Having an option for using at least some of the broken crayon pieces we have is still better than throwing them out and wasting them.
