Editorial Reviews
With the release of Illmatic, in 1994 Nas quickly established himself as a hip hop icon and has become one of the hottest artists on the music scene today. The landmark album has been lauded by critics as one of the most exemplary hip hop recordings of all time. Illmatic contributed to the revival of the New York City rap scene and has been consistently ranked near the top of many "best album" lists. Today, the collection remains one of the most widely celebrated and influential albums in history with Rolling Stone proclaiming, "a portrait of an artist as a hood, loner, tortured soul, juvenile delinquent, and fledgling social critic... [the album] still stands as one of rap's crowning achievements." NPR Music called the collection "[a] masterwork of story-telling, lyricism and beat-making," while upon the album s release, The Village Voice gave Nas the title of, "one of the most important writers of the 20th century."
Illmatic XX is a 2 disc, 20th anniversary special edition featuring new artwork, a 24 page booklet with new liner notes by Sacha Jenkins, artist tributes with rare & previously unseen photos. Disc 1, the original debut album, has been remastered from the original source tapes and disc 2 features 10 rare remixes, demos & freestyles from the era.
"With Illmatic, I didn't think about it. I just did it. I believe everybody has good instincts. Now I m a man from that past and I'm supremely grateful. There's a Nigerian proverb 'What is past is prologue'. I'm here today because of Illmatic." - Nas

illmatic is 100percent real and lived through.
Nas is still one of the very, very best.
today.
Nas is still great.Life is Good is like a grown up Illmatic.
but back to this reissue.
unfortunately i am reviewing the MP3 version, but this album is so good
and it always fits whatever occasion.
if you already own Illmatic, just the MP3 version is worth it.
you get a second disc of really good outtakes.
I'm a villain,the song,is on here.
a lost classic.
it's worth it to get the CD just for that song, actually.
one love is here in various remixes.
also it ain't hard to tell.
remixes, but this classic stuff in what sounds like stellar,is always worth it.
illmatic is from the beginning of the 90s.
along with All Eyez on me and the chronic, illmatic makes the holy trinity
of 90s hiphop albums.
this reissue or whatever is great.
if you're tired of illmatic,if that is possible,
you get a "new:" disc of alternate mixes.
highly,highly recommended.
on 180g vinyl this album is a must have for any music aficionado. even if you don't like R.A.P. (rhythmic american poetry) you should be able to appreciate this work for the art that it is.
don't listen to the words, listen to the message. the story that NaS brings us is a story of a 20 year old kid that wasn't supposed to make it despite the odds and obstacles of the community. a struggle many young minorities are going through today.
good music shines through.
Why then, do I give this a 4? Well, the reason is that if you already own Illmatic, there isn't much incentive to purchase this. I don't own the original, but I will note the differences between the 10th and 20th anniversary edition - packaging and the bonus material. There are more bonus tracks in the 20th anniversary edition, though the only interesting tracks were "I'm the Villain" and the radio show track. You can actually find the first track elsewhere. The remixes are just new tracks for the rhymes, although the One Love remix features Brand Nubian member Sadat X. The CD insert has various pictures of Nas - a screen capture of The Source's review, a group pic of Nas with the producer giants Q-Tip, Large Professor, and DJ Premier, pictures from the original album (I presume), and Nas in Queensbridge. It also has a very well written history of Illmatic by Sacha Jenkins.
I couldn't tell if they remastered the soundtrack, as it sounds identical to the 10th anniversary edition I own.
Overall, if you don't own Illmatic, I would recommend this version. If you do, the only thing note worthy is the CD insert, which only die hard fans would want for display.
